A class is not a class without goals or guidelines. There are some classes that leave it up to the instructor to decide what the goals should be. Is that what you are referring to? There also are study halls designed as a quiet place to do homework. These are sometimes referred to as self guided classes.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out what kind of educational animal you are talking about.

Well, since it's college it's not a study hall. By there are no goals, I mean there are really no obvious goals. Just from reading the "Syllabus" (I put it in quotes because it's rarely followed.) the class is supposed to "teach us to be a part of a community" or something along those lines.

It does little to nothing for educational growth. It's more of a "Hey, let's all be friends" class. If that makes any sense.

I don't see any value in the class as described. All you have to do to teach community is to have a class that requires group goals. (Athletics, Choir, Band, Broadcasting, Engineering project, Business Leadership, Debate, Theater, etc.)

In order to be part of a community, you need goals. Why don't you all pick a service project? Pick something the community needs. Even as a group of students, you can help each other, or as part of a town or place you could help others and begin to know each other in the class.

It does sound like a "study hall" to me as you describe it. I hope you are not paying for this class!!

The class is required to graduate. So... Yeah, I am paying for it I suppose. I hadn't thought of that before, and now I'm more annoyed with the class.
