Would you still listen to your favorite musical artist if you KNEW they were racist? Ask a Question

I said yes, but it would only be about the music. I would listen to it for the music, not the artist. I probably would care if they were openly racist, or even subliminally racist. It is wrong, no matter how small it is. If you are racist, you are living in the past, and should not shout your views to the future that may advance the human race. Freedom of Speech, but seriously, shut up.

I don't listen to Rap.

I've begun listening to an artist's music because I found an interview with them to be very interesting. I've never heard an artist give racist viewpoints in an interview, but if I did I'm sure I would respond as negatively to their work as I did positively to ones who espoused interesting opinions.

"Other"

For me, all parts are important. Music, lyrics, artist's background. If an artist was a racist, it would probably reflect into lyrics and I wouldn't start to like it in the first place.

But if I found it out later, it doesn't mean the music's bad. I would be affected but most likely wouldn't stop to listen to that music.

It's always about taking the best out of everything.

"Are their any queers in the theater tonight? Get 'em up against the wall...

There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me... get 'em up against the wall...

And that one looks Jewish, and that one's a coon! Who let all this riff-raff into the room?

There's one smoking a joint... and another with spots! If I had my way, I've have all of ya shot!"

LOL--I think I remember that outburst. I dont care to hear an of his work--PINK FLOYD LYRICS - In The Flesh

You don't like Pink Floyd? My heavens - that's one of my all time favorite artists. You have to know this! You're yanking my chain. The piece is from The Wall. That wasn't a racist tirade - it was the lyricization of an out-of-control tyrant, akin to Hitler.

LOL--I remember you mentioning him before, I expected to hear from you and waugs on that comment--I guess I am just not in music as deep and lots of folks are and as far as I know I have never heard anything the guy has done or really care about most of them. Music is just a filler for me and have not bought any since the 70's----I know, hard to believe..

Pink Floyd was actually a group - Roger Waters This is one of my favorite pieces from The Final Cut. Since it's a concept album, there's a first song that leads into this one - and it's too long to put both in. What has just happened is an enemy craft has fired upon a British military craft and shot the gunner. The other men in the plane are listening to the gunner's dying words on the intercom.

The Gunner's Dream (Waters)

Floating down through the clouds

Memories come rushing up to meet me now.

In the space between the heavens

and in the corner of some foreign field

I had a dream.

I had a dream.

Good-bye Max.

Good-bye Ma.

After the service when you're walking slowly to the car

And the silver in her hair shines in the cold November air

You hear the tolling bell

And touch the silk in your lapel

And as the tear drops rise to meet the comfort of the band

You take her frail hand

And hold on to the dream.

A place to stay

"Oi! A real one ..."

Enough to eat

Somewhere old heroes shuffle safely down the street

Where you can speak out loud

About your doubts and fears

And what's more no-one ever disappears

You never hear their standard issue kicking in your door.

You can relax on both sides of the tracks

And maniacs don't blow holes in bandsmen by remote control

And everyone has recourse to the law

And no-one kills the children anymore.

And no one kills the children anymore.

Night after night

Going round and round my brain

His dream is driving me insane.

In the corner of some foreign field

The gunner sleeps tonight.

What's done is done.

We cannot just write off his final scene.

Take heed of his dream.

Take heed.

Interesting, thanks, I will give him (them) a listen--sometime.

Bec44, if you are going to give them a listen, start out with one of their albums before final cut. In my opinion final cut wasn't one of their best.

Wish You Were Here may be their best. Dark Side of the Moon was outstanding.

I tend to agree, Wish You Were Here is consistently my first pick.

I confess I had some difficulty (and still do) with Final Cut. I was still pissed off at Waters for firing Richard Wright during the Wall sessions, which began the disintegration of the band. Musically I thought it was a bit too self-indulgent, which is saying something for Roger Waters.

I like it, but it is not among my favorite Floyd.

That would explain why most critics and fans hated it. (lol)

It was self-indulgent, but when you put it in context with his life I find it a great vocalization of political rage from a single person viewpoint. Protest music for the 80s - when no one was protesting much of anything. (lol)

Not really. I quit listening to rock in the 70s, started into outlaw country, dropped that a few years later, now I mostly review folk and bluegrass.

Join the club, I haven't been to a Pink Floyd concert since they were on the "Animals" tour way back in 1976.

Right, it was the bad guys speaking.

It's a band, not a 'him', btw. Don't feel bad, people made that mistake so much they even included it in one of their songs. "Oh by the way, which one's Pink?"

You need to hear "In The Flesh" in context of the rest of the "Wall" album to understand it. Which, being one of my favorite recordings of all time, is an experience I would highly recommend...

I know the artist is not racist, but the lyrical content of this song sure comes across that way, that's why I posted it.

I understand that now, thanks. The words sure do sound like a racist person, but if you say so and silly, I will go with it. I thought of first was that so called comic that went off on a tangent in that club and was record4ed, I don't ever want to see that sick fucker again.

I think anyone would. You had to know Pink Floyd to know where that one was coming from.

Earlier on the album, you'll hear... "Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left you'll find my favorite axe... don't look so frightened, this is just a passing phase, one of my bad days..."

If possible, try to listen to the entire album in one sitting. It's like watching a film, almost. (So much so they made a film out of it, which I didn't care for. I prefer the version in my head.)

You will love "Comfortably Numb".

OK, thanks, will try this evening..

They mince no words...

"Bus stop rat bag, ha ha charade you are.

You fucked up old hag, ha ha charade you are.

You radiate cold shafts of broken glass.

You're nearly a good laugh,

Almost worth a quick grin.

You like the feel of steel,

You're hot stuff with a hatpin,

And good fun with a hand gun.

You're nearly a laugh,

You're nearly a laugh

But you're really a cry."

If, as you say, they are already my FAVORITE then of course my answer would have to be YES. If my answer was NO how could I call them my favorite? Duhhhh! o.O

As long as the music is good and I like listening to it, the band members private lives is no concern of mine.

Exactly my thinking. Only if they bring their hate into their music would I care.

So, who is the racist musician PlayDead?

No one in particular.

after i saw that bit about Amy Winehouse (which i honestly never liked her in the first place) just had me thinking about it.

I listen to classical music. Many, if not most of the composers would have had prejudices I find abhorrent.

Many musicians and composers have had and do have some very strange interests outside of music. Many suffer(ed) from depression. Many have or had very strange sexual fetishes. Some just plain wierd.

lol

This comment made me smile :D
