I've actually thought about that. My neighbors on one side have cleared land; my property is partially cleared and wooded. The cleared portion of my land would grow enough vegetables for a number of families (after all, you can grow all the veg you need for a family of four in an eight-by-ten space if you know what you are doing).

Grain is the hardest crop to grow, not vegetables. It takes a large amount of cleared land to be efficient.

See a possible plan here?

I sure do! So how about you invite those folks to form a group on hyperlocavore.com and get the discussion going... Spring is not so far away and those seed catalogs aren't going to read themselves!

Thanks for the encouragement!

This is really a solution for a lot of problems. Growing just a little of your own food is wonderful.

Hahaha, amen april! The question sure was trying to paint a pretty picture.

I'm a better salesman than I am a gardener, and my neighbor the doctor is the same way. It's financially wiser for me to stay in the office an extra 2 hrs a day than it is to spend that time in the garden.

I'll let those who love growing produce keep/enjoy their jobs, and I'll continue to enjoy mine.

..And why would we need to share our land to have effective gardens??? This question screams communism!

That's funny TysonP that's the first though that came into my head when I read this question. Why would I need to share my yard to have an effective garden?I bet a bunch of commies would do this. And then they would get into a fight about who should get what share of the garden because they feel they did more of the work. And then the whole garden experiment would fail.

I don't need my neighbors help to plant a bunch of vegetables in my back yard.

Haha Welcome back jave, I haven't seen ya in a while. Did you get some nicorette patches for christmas by chance?

HA no I'm actually smoking way more than usual.I have begun to disgust my self with the increase in my nicotine intake.

I haven't gone anywhere I still check in here every now and then. It's just arguing about the same things gets kind of redundant. So I've been commenting less.I'm sure this year will be very interesting!

1 whirled. 1 planet.

Hey TysonP Watch this and tell me what you think...

http://tinyurl.com/9ow54u

Also - You are an American - but you seem to have a problem with other Americans pursuing something other than money... Don't you believe in freedom?

PS -- GWB ran up the biggest budget crisis in history - as well as collapsing the world economy by giving all his cronies cushy jobs... Honest conservatives - who are legion will agree...And since when is frugality a 'Democratic" value?

You seem really confused to me.

Have a nice day!

yea,Barny Frank and his cronies had nothing to do with it!Nor did a single Democrat.

I'm a libertarian not a republican. I have my beefs with GWB too, trust me. The republicans are democrat-lights in my opinion. They pay lip service to cutting taxes and downsizing the government but their actions show otherwise.

"as well as collapsing the world economy by giving all his cronies cushy jobs..." Talk about confusion. The housing bubble was created by by Chris Dodd and his dem friends who insisted on making owning a home a right. They strong armed banks to lower their standards for mortgages, millions of unqualified home buyers got into mortgages they couldn't handle, and down we went.

Aside from this diversion you've created, liberals still tax, spend and regulate just like I was saying.

"And since when is frugality a 'Democratic" value?" What is this supposed to mean? Being frugal has never been a democratic value. Dems spend freely no matter what! When we have a problem like we're facing today, dems throw more money at it just like we're seeing with Obama's economic stimulus checks.

You have a good day too.

I'm more close to the libetarians than the dems...is there something about my idea that is not'libertarian?'

If I'm not mistaken, the first line of the comment you replied to encouraged you to exercise your freedom and do it. I just said that both myself and the people at Chiquita and Dole would be better off if I left the produce to them. If you think it's worth you time, do it.

And off we go to pursue our dreams! Did you watch the video? I'm curious what you think? What do you sell?

I was a crap sales person... got fired once for not selling people more camera than they needed...

ah well.

Take care.

Good video. In certain parts of the world this video is applicable, but since industrialization we face a completely different game. I get the message and can appreciate it though.

Now, how does growing veggies in your back yard tie in to the video?

We all pursue different dreams. I've pursued money - got it and got bored...so off to another dream...building communities, revivfying neighborhoods, geeking out and growing veggies! With the occasional irish trad session thrown in...

I don't think the video was advocating that you go grow veg... I guess the question is for you what is the end game. Is it to earn big bucks to quit so you can follow your dreams?

Anyway - it resonated for me.

Take care.

PS - is there anyone out there that will admit to being a republican out there anymore?

(I kid you)

But seriously - they seem to have completely disappeared.

It seems like a nice idea, but I would worry about the letigious nature of our country. What if someone was injured/sunburned on my property while gardening? What if there was a dispute over who claimed which string bean plants? It sounds kinda silly, but I'm serious. Plus I suck at growing things and like my privacy.

1 Replies to asletson9's answer

Well - that you suck at growing things might be a very good reason to set up a yardshare! Or to find one to participate in. Perhaps you are not the one who agrees to share your yard. Maybe your contribution is something that doesn't involve a green thumb! Maybe your contribution is getting a lawyer friend to write up a workable agreement that all parties are happy to participate in...Contracts can go a long way to protecting people and their assets. And your reward, lots of cheaper food, some new friends and the usual good stuff that comes at creating something positive with other people!

I like my privacy too! I'm pretty introverted. But I have also had some of my best experiences doing group projects! Both at work and on my own time it has always been rewarding to get something good done.

I am actually looking for lawyers interested in writing a sort of boilerplate agreement for yardsharing. Just like any relationship people have to be ready to learn and use conflict resolution skills like adults. I am working on a content section on that for folks at hyperlocavore. That said...

There are litigious people...but if I spent all my time worrying about them I wouldn't leave the house!

We all have different levels of risk tolerance, expressed in different ways.

For me I am tired of living in non communities near people who see me as a non-person. I want us all to grow past that.

YMMV! Thank you for responding with your thoughts I am sure there are many that feel as you do!
