They were US Presidents -- I guess they gave themselves a Presidential Pardon
Examples of surveillance, legal and illegal, contained in the Church Committee report:[11]
* President Roosevelt asked the FBI to put in its files the names of citizens sending telegrams to the White House opposing his "national defense" policy and supporting Col. Charles Lindbergh.
* President Truman received inside information on a former Roosevelt aide's efforts to influence his appointments, labor union negotiating plans, and the publishing plans of journalists.
* The Kennedy Administration had the FBI wiretap a Congressional staff member, three executive officials, a lobbyist, and a Washington law firm. US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy received the fruits of an FBI "tap" on Martin Luther King, Jr. and a "bug" on a Congressman, both of which yielded information of a political nature.
* President Johnson asked the FBI to conduct "name checks" of his critics and members of the staff of his 1964 opponent, Senator Barry Goldwater. He also requested purely political intelligence on his critics in the Senate, and received extensive intelligence reports on political activity at the 1964 Democratic Convention from FBI electronic surveillance.
And please don't forget the assassination of Black Panther Party leaders, and the likely attempted murder of Judi Bari and Daryl Cherney--to name just a few.
So then which FBI agents committed the assassinations and the murders ? The report cited in the Wiki noted that the two rival organizations BPP and US did the shootings, read like a gang war like they have in your Los Angeles, or are FBI agents secretly gang members and actually perform the drvie by shootings.
If you are that interested, you can try and obtain the documents through FOIA.
As I said, the entire COINTELPRO story has never--and likely will never--be told. But you can find a lot by looking at trial transcripts, such as those associated with the suit Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney--successfully--brought against the FBI.
Please clear up my confusion -- never in my readings have I come across a national political police force that was in the United States... what is the name of it ? I always thought that the police in the US was organized along state, county, city, and other local governmental entities

I didn't realize that the FBI was a political police -- so if that is the case why aren't they rounding up the tea party folks for dissenting against the government ? I recall seeing their efforts against the Mafia and the Klu Klux Klan -- not sure if they would be considered left wing.
Because the FBI is a super-conservative organization that is dispatched primarily when Big Business sees its profits being threatened. As when they acted against union organizers and socialists.

She is speaking positive about the USA by informing us about secret criminal activities. In many countries she would be imprisoned for telling the truth. Heck... if she publicly announced criminal activities by COINTELPRO between 1949 and 1976 she'd probably have been imprisoned even in "the land of the free and the home of the brave."
