Sweden has been in slow decline for about 40 years. It is stuck with an unsustainable welfare state. Even the pretence that the country could effectively defend itself has been abandoned. Large scale immigration is destroying Swedish society.
So maybe not the "worst case" but not one which our US friends should seek to emulate.
I am indeed a fan of Hitchens. I agree with him about 70% of the time. But like any contraversialist he can get things wrong big time.
In my opinion the possibility of bad outcomes from an Obama presidency is several orders of magnitude greater than a similar consequence of a Palin vice-presidency.
I fear Obama will be a diastrous Pres - but I hope I am wrong. It looks like we will soon find out.
No need for me to defend my position - its not as though I m campaigning. Unlike the media who have had their knives out for the admirable Palin since the day she was chosen.
Sweden is more "welfarist" than socialist in that few companies are state owned. Efficient private industry has just about kept its head above water, paying the taxes that allow the bloated welfare state to survive.
Among the state monopolies are liquor stores and pharmacies. The present non/socialist goverment is about to privatise the latter.
Mine cost me almost $5,000 last year. My usage: $0.00. One the other hand, if I get a life-threatening disease, I will likely be one of the almost three quarters of a MILLION people who lose their homes to health-care costs.
Not that I can get good care here. Mostly it consists of shoving ever more pills down you throat.

I've never been married (the only acceptable answer to the question, 'When did you stop beating your wife?'' of which type of interrogatory this question is an example).

You think the Swedish socialism is a failure?
Because to most Americans, Sweden is THE definition of socialism.

Do you want to compare US healthcare-insurance to European? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_health_care
We're paying (a lot!) less when we need the help, but we're paying more when we don't need it.

The failed policies of capitalism under McCain would be much better. It is hilarious that China is likely the USA's saviour from economic ruin.
We now have socialized banking due to 8 years of unregulated greed. You can't blame BO for what was left on the plate.
Catch 60 Minutes last night?

No, first of all, Obama won't bring something that's even close to socialism.
Second, socialism hasn't failed, but still is there and on top of lots of charts. (Look at Belgium, Sweden and lots of other European countries)
