In what sense a failure? I am pretty sure the Chinese will do a great job at organising the games in such a way that all possible protest groups will be locked up, killed, threatened and scared away so that the world can focus on sport instead of on China's horrific human rights situation...
So in the sense of the Chinese government and of those who do not want to see what is happening it will probably be a very succesfull event. For those who where forced to leave their homes to build the Olympic stadions, for those journalists who where shut up when they tried to report openly, and for Tibetans and others who suffer from the increased repression at the moment it won't be such "fun".

They are also blocking access to websites not connected with reporting on the Games. Apparently they have unblocked a couple of news sites now, but lots of stuff is inacessible.
I get the feeling some people would like to see it be a failure. I hope it is a roaring success. I would like to see China feel more a part of the world community.
I would like to see the Olympics be a great succes too, and also wish China to be more part of the rest of the world, yet I think China could do a lot more to achieve that. I also thin it is bad when politics become intermingled with what should be just a great sports event. Therefore I think it was a wrong decision to grant the games to Beijing in hindsight. The Chinese government promised to improve the human rights situation when they got the games, yesterday Amnesty International presented a report that shows the contrary, a dramatic deterioration which could even be linked to the games...
