Does depression count as mental illness?

1 Replies to anderf's answer

yes, depression would count.

Let's see... Mom out driving drunk, Cousin Billy getting arrested for peeing in the middle of Mainstreet during lunch hour, or little Janie going down on her best friend Nancy next door.... Well, I'd be most worried about Mom. Mom is in the greatest danger of hurting herself or someone else, so I'll have to go with alcoholism/addiction being the hardest to accept.

Wow. Homophobia is quite popular around here.

Not with everyone. So sorry, there are some real idiots around here. ;(

I am not homophobic, but can at least understand that to some people it's not the fact that their offspring is gay which would be upsetting, per se; but more particularly consider the implications of one's being so, when one is also an "only child". In such circumstance, it is the fact that that means it is the end of their family's entire genealogical tree in just one generation! Generations and generations of one's family's genes & lineage suddenly come to a complete end forever with just one gay "only child" - who will never reproduce; Which would be very upsetting in itself to some people and not just difficult to overcome. On such reasoning, it is unfair to call such people "morons", "idiots" etc., for seeing it that way, as long as they are not homophobic as well.

So you think those people would think the same way about having an infertile child?

I've seen that too.

Not their biological children.

So some random line of not-special-at-all DNA not recombining with some other random line of DNA is more distressing than having a child who is mentally ill? A drug addict?

Why DID you think that you were specifically referred to with he word "idiot?" Have you noticed that we have some insanely (literally!) homophobic members here? Odds are the reference was directed towards them.

my mom is gay. She had 3 children. So my friend you are wrong.

Another personal attack on anyone that disagrees with your opinion. I thought you were better than that. B^(

Actually, not a personal attack at all, as I did not, and have not, named specific people who are insanely homophobic. No need, they betray themselves repeatedly.

I did rather pointedly ask why thephilosophist thought it was a personal attack--after all, I was actually responding to a comment about homophobes when I said that there are insanely homophobic members here, so if he is not one of them, why should he feel insulted?

It's easy to be personal without naming names if you know the players.

That really does not make any sense at all.

No, it's not. Homosexuality can be a problem for families for any number of reasons. I would put the number of homophobic at 1 to 3.

Seriously people? Being gay over Alcoholism?? Have u ever seen the effects it has?? All the physical abuse claims?

Some of course are idiots and homophobic for which there is no justification; but, my having said as much, not all of those who answered so are simply idiots, I would suggest: please see my answer above.

Posted to the wrong place. The combination of a slow slow computer with a variable-speed satellite connection frequently holds things in a queue until it feels like continuing. I think. At any rate, the comment was in reply to

Coming from a family blessed with all three of the above (and me being the gay one), I can at least speak from the experience of my family. Being gay was easily the least of a problem, (if it ever was a problem to anyone except myself). By far the most disturbing/problematic has been (and still is) the mental illness category. I understand there are different sorts of mental illnes as well as different kinds of addictions so that is hard to compare in general. However when it comes to acceptance, I find the mental illness perhaps easier to accept because I realise the person concerned cannot be blamed for it and has not chosen this either. Now with alcoholism/addiction I do believe there is an element of choice involved and addiction can be very detrimental to family members as well. So I will choose that category as hardest to accept.

Geez, not only a bigot but dumb too.

"On December 15, 1973, the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its official list of mental disorders. The American Psychological Association Council of Representatives adopted the same measure on January 24-26, 1975."

It was classified as an illness, until people got their heads out of their asses.

Liberals had nothing to do with it. Did you think that the classification of illnesses was voted on or something? It is decided by professionals in the field. Which, like most doctors, probably lean to the conservative.

Not everyone thinks their prejudices constitute natural law as you do.

Nope, nobody's fooled here, except you & april of course.

Well...moving back towards the question a bit more...Addiction is harder to accept. The other two are not choices.

The way I see it only one of the options listed is treatable, (Not including medications and what not that can be taken for mental illness, because they aren't all 100% effective anyways) therefore there would be no excuse for alcoholism/addiction to occur. Thats why it would be the hardest for me to accept.

But then again I am pretty biased considering how I am gay, have a friend who is bipolar and helped a friend out of addiction. :)
