Wal-Mart. Target is overpriced. K-Mart is too low rent.

Furthermore Wal-Mart will honor any other store's ad with little squabbling over the departments where they will honor this policy. Most other stores who honor some other store's ads have far more preconditions than Wal-Mart. Perhaps some items are cheaper at Target. I suspect some are cheaper at K-Mart. But if I am shopping the sales (which is how I do 75% of my shopping) Wal-Mart is best because in honoring all of the other store's ads it saves me a lot of gas traveling from store to store.

One other thing... in Target they will almost always call for a supervisor if a price cannot be scanned. In Wal-Mart they almost always take the customer's word for it. I feel like they trust me more at Wal-Mart.

Eh, I find that Wal-Mart isn't cheaper on everything. I only go there if absolutely necessary. Once I am in the parking lot I am already feeling like what am I doing :0)

To find out who is cheaper a local tv sender bought the same items from different store chains. The winner - TARGET. The very last on the list - WALMART.

Hum, good info :0)

Isn't it possible they had an axe to grind with Wal-Mart and purposely went in search of items where they could tell this to their TV audience?

I bet if YOU randomly picked 50 items and sent one shopper to Target and the other to Wal-Mart, the Wal-Mart shopper would save more.

Would be an interesting exercise if you have the time and energy.... We only have a Wal-mart here, but I do not find them cheaper all of the time.

And I bet - never mind, Chipmonk. You buy at WalMart, I care and therefore won't.

For several reasons I don't believe in your thesis of "an axe to grind ...". For one the mentioned, local tv-sender is independant and has a very good reputation. For two the lawyers would have a field-day.

Wal-Mart is a nasty place ( had to shop there 4 times in the last 4 years...YUK ). Target is to bright ( to far from home anyway ). K-Mart is to slow ( I put up with it when forced to go to big stores ).

Too true. I remember the first time I ever walked into a WalMart, a couple years ago. It STANK of plastic and polyester. Becuase local businesses had been driven under by it, I HAD to purchase something there (thread).Yet another reason, if one were needed, to NOT shop there. Oh, and of course the complete lack of service, including standing in line for 20 minutes to check out a couple spools of thread.

Wal-Mart is awful, now when you return you stand there as they print out some label to place on your item. I find people at Target for the most part friendlier and the store in much better condition. The Wal-Mart by me is only maybe a year or so older than the Target, but it looks so much older.

I think one of the reasons that Wal-Mart is more unfriendly is because the employees are unhappy and most hate working there because Wal-Mart is mean to them and treats them like criminals. I know this because I and several people I know have worked there and people who I meet who work or have worked for them feel the same way. They pick one or two people to be really nice to in order to make themselves look good but the rest are screwed ( no matter how well or hard they work ).

Hum, I have heard that about Wal-Mart too. Frankly it isn't just the people, but things are also so untidy and I feel so claustrophobic there. I have heard they are trying to change their image, I sure wish them luck with that because it won't be easy.

I usually judge these type of places by how they care for restrooms and Wal-Marts are always nasty. This restroom judgment of mine comes from being a custodian for years. The ONLY way that they can improve their image is to treat their workers better, quit being one of the two highest outsources in the US, and close their company towns in China and anywhere else they have them.

You are correct, Doreen, it's scandalous how WalMart treats not only their employess, called by me "modern-day-slavery".

I saw shocking, eye-opening documentaries about WalMart; one was on CNBC - Biography. Two of the top managers looked with serious faces in the cameras insisting they would even share one hotel room when on business trips just to keep their prices so low for the good of their customers only. Yeeh, right!

I admit, they are very successful by making believe, they are offering the lowest prices. It was suggested customers should know the prices of the competitors when they go to WalMart.

Not long ago it was reported WalMart would not have any factories at all in this country, but instead they would own them in third world countries where they would have knowingly (!) many children under 10 years working for them. I was not even surprised.

I suggest, greeneyegirl79, you read additional replies to the question from cmurph198 "Do you believe WalMart is evil?" 6 days ago.

Btw: For several reasons friends and we are boycotting WalMart for many years.

I am pretty poor but I still shop local when I can even though it is not good for me financially. I desire to support local and American when I can. I have boycotted Wal-Mart also except that I shamefully went there 4 times in the last for years ( please forgive me ) because we needed something that no body else had at the time.

No, please don't, Doreen, you should not be ashamed at all, really not! There is no reason for that.

I agree with you and admire you for your supporting local and Americans. We think in exactly the same way you do and prefer small business' whenever possible. Among other positives their services are so much better as well. Don't you agree?

Enjoy your weekend, Doreen. :)

Of the ones listed, Target (pronounced "Tarjee"!)

3 Replies to TheSheep's answer

Tarjee, hey, what do ewe know, I like to pronounce it that way too ;0)

That's not how Target says it in their TV ads. They use a "bulls eye" as their logo because it's synonymous with target (but ewe knew that I'm sure).

Ah, Wally World, Tarjee, hehe, people are silly aren't they. And remember Rainman, "K-Mart Sucks." ;0)

Wal-Mart pushes a lot harder than the other two. They push their suppliers, their contractors and their employees.

When I had a commercial flooring company, we did floors for all three companies. K-Mart just wanted a written maintenance schedule. The Target people checked everything quickly and professionally, left a short punch list, and thanked us for doing a good job quickly. The Wal-Mart people went searching for problems. When they couldn't find any, they called in their superiors. The final judges sent out for lasers to see how straight the tile was. They tried to tell me that there was a problem, but I pointed out that we were in spec. They seemed disappointed. I realized later that they were just trying to get a discount for workmanship. When they couldn't find anything, they tried to bully me for a discount.

So, K-Mart wanted maintenance. Target wanted professionalism and Wal-Mart wanted an edge. For me, that sums up the differences.

Interesting assessment :0) And I see it hitting the nail on the head so to speak.

Yes, JWBrothers, that's exactly what I have heard as well.

I think Target is winning this poll mainly because it is not cool to say you like Wal-Mart, but the reason Wal-Mart has almost as many votes is because some people (like myself) don't care if it's not cool to like Wal-Mart. I just like to save money.

You know Chipmonk, you are right, I rarely go to K-mart because it takes a minimum of 25 minutes and averages 35 minutes in the checkout line. Otherwise, I would prefer them over Wal-Mart.

Wal-Mart has the best prices in town on groceries and household goods. They always have handicap scooters available and usually have whatever hard to find item I need. Their meats are lower quality and higher priced than what I buy at local supermarkets, (also imported) but I tend to stock up on food staples when I'm there. If I need several different kinds of items and don't have time to shop around or if I need to shop after the kids are asleep, I usually end up there. It's not because I love Wal-Mart; It's because they meet my needs in certain areas better than others.

I like Target. Their bright, uncluttered stores, emphasis on product design and fair prices appeal to me. I buy household goods, clothing basics, and items where I want higher quality, but don't want to pay a lot. If you are looking for cheap plastic storage boxes or one gallon shampoo for $1.99, look somewhere else. But if you need an inexpensive table lamp that doesn't look cheap or some plastic tableware for by the pool or picnicking, it's perfect. Despite all the good things I'm saying, two things keep down my visits. My shopping requires a minimum one hour drive time and $4-$6 in transportation costs. I am in the habit of combining trips wherever possible and Wal-Mart is usually more likely to have everything I need. Second: I walk with a cane and have great difficulty walking more than a couple of hundred feet without resting. The Targets here have few scooters, all in poor repair and low on charge. About 1/3 of the time, I can not shop there at all. If I do go there, I have to allow extra time to go somewhere else just in case I can't find a working scooter.

So it's really a matter of which store meets your needs the best, whether that's price, quality, selection, availability, convenience, access or all of the above.
