Anyplace the West has an interest is a virtual tinderbox. In days of old weren't the virtual tinderboxes anyplace where "First World" or "Second World" countries thought they could govern "locals" better than they could govern themselves? Would such "renegade nations" be such hot spots if "the West" had no interest in them? If you say it wouldn't make any difference then perhaps truly "the West" should be recognized as the saviours of their societies; however, if the locals believe they could coexist just as well without help from "the West" then maybe they should have that chance? Who died and left us in charge of their affairs?

Well said.

LOL, ...well, what does anyone from Guam know anyhow? =]

al gore gave a great speech this week. basically he said we could kill 3 birds with one stone. we have 3 problems. We are borrowing money from china to wage a war in iraq for oil that destroys the environment if we burn it.

If we change over to 100% non-carbon based energy such as wind and solar (which we have the technology to do now) 1. we would stop polluting. 2. we would stop sending money to the middle east. 3. we would not need to wage war to get oil, which would save us a billion dollars a day, which we wouldn't have to borrow from china, 4. we would create a frenzy of new innovation and development as our whole economy switches over to this new type of energy. whole new companies will form that we never thought of, just like when the internet came online.

think of it. no price per gallon anymore because you charge your car with the sun. wouldn't that be nice? and that's just one tiny little thing.

i can't wait!

oh and it basically does all 4 of the things you asked in your question. so that's 4 birds with one stone.

What's in it for Bush and his friends?

if we fix all those problems? they'll come along kicking and screaming, but i'm sure they'll figure out a criminal profit angle anyway.

on a serious note, with al gore's electranet idea... http://electranet.com (see his speech on the right) we could have completely democratic energy. something the libertarians would cheer, once it was in place. you could get energy, and never deal with a huge monopolistic utility. ever, because everybody would be simply connected to everybody else, and you could just share your energy... vs. the bush version which would have somebody like t boon pickens owning all the wind mills in the nation and becoming maybe the fist trillionaire.

I'm a bit divided on this one because it's clear that the most pressing global issue is the environment problems but on the other hand the ultimate higher goal for humanity is its scientific development that can and do have an important role in fixing the ecological and other problems.

I guess we should do both, as they will also take care of the other two issues as imafractal, quoting Al Gore, mentioned.

Okay, since I'm too tired and/or too lazy to think, I'll play the devil's advocate instead:

So they find out the new earth-like planet (mentioned in Slash Dot yesterday) really does have water. It is probably so far away a human couldn't travel there in 500 light years and short of going there in a state of suspended animation or via a time warp, getting there would be impossible. So we acquire great knowledge in the process of satisfying our curiosity, but in the short term where does it get us?

yeah but the guy is right.. If we don't do something about GW in the next 20 years we're dust.. and I don't think we'll be able to find a way to travel 500 LY in a short period of time by then..

for start your article tries to discredit Al Gore, and tries to manipulate people into thinking global warming is a result of natural causes but does not undermine the threat it represents to the world.

If I where to agree with your article and say CO2 emissions are not a direct cause to global warming I wold ask you what is the cause of this phenomenon and how can we reverse it. or at least stop it from doing any more damage to our world.

But tell me why did Al. Gore win a nobel prize if his spreading lies, and how come the great majority of the world scientists say global warming is done by us and it is a serious threat.

Why did the EU agree to shift it's entire energy sector to renewable sources by the end of the century if GW is not a real threat, and why did the G8 agree to cot off green house gases by 50% by 2050?

Don't let your self be manipulated by people whom are too selfish to look beyond their own pocket, the future of our entire species is threatened
