Yes, you were using it as a pejorative.
To use gay for happy seems rather oldfashioned to me. What I find problematic is people who start to use gay for "stupid". Because some people see homosexual people as stupid that is insulting to the gay community in my opinion even though many who use it do not realise. Therefore I want to say "Gay is not a four letter word people!"
