What is the main reason why humans aren't animals? Ask a Question

thumbs

I have to disappoint you - from a biological point of view we are animals. Each animal has specific characters. The ones you name are perhaps not even unique to humans, but being human does not make us non-animal.

Agree. If its alive its animal :)

My rhododendrens would beg to differ on this point. :-)

Right on the spot, totally agree.

Humans are.

Yep, ...can't vote on this one, but it will be fun to vote up just to obtain another "stupid people statistic." :)

A better question might be about what makes humans different than other animals. The answer? The ability to reason.

There are other animals that have learned to use tools. Isn't is reasoning ability that helps them decide the right tool to use for a job?

I agree that question would be better. When I try to think of an answer, it is probably not the fact that we can reason or have a language. I think we humans tend to value those very highly, but they are probably less unique in a biological sense. Things that make us human are for instance the fact that we exclusively walk on 2 legs, have lost our dense fur and have a "human" immune system. Furthermore it is not just the exclusive characters but also the unique combination which makes us human, so being bipedal, speak a language etc.. all those combined make us human.

I think we are animals, but are different from other animals by our ability to reason and control our emotion.

I know a LOT of humans that don't meet those two criteria. (lol)

:)

ability to learn... to teach and to love and being so wise i guess!

dolphins and a lot of other animals can learn. They learn to do tricks. There was even an ape you could 'speak' by pointing to figures that resembled a word. He/she could answer the questions his/her trainer asked.

Lions teach there children how to survive.

Elephants love there children, if one gets killed she won't just walk away. There is footage of a elephant, her child was killed. And she stand next to her child for a few hours. As if she said goodbye.

every species on Earth has a means of communication, therefore has a language. most animals display social organization, hence proven by the existence of packs, hordes, hives and other forms of organization. All have the ability to learn to some extent, some have the ability to solve complex problems, even alter the environment to fit their own needs, proven by the existence of nests, burrows, dams, spider nets and other artificial structure created by all kinds of animals around the globe.

So the only difference between us and them I guess is that we act and think on a much larger scale, and as Shabana sad we can control our emotions, but it is not proven that animal can't do that.

Don't forget that the greatest way in which we differ from animals is that we kill each other and other species for entertainment.

some animals kill for kiks, that's not unique to humans

But, dont we say some of our insticts like fear, anger etc. are animal insticts. For example,

In case you step on a dog it will bite. But, we dont do that.We control our anger and accept the apology made to us by that person.

at least most us us do so. had a friend whom wrecked his monitor cause he was losing a football game. Can't rally say the guy was controlling his anger...

I thought all mammals were animals, ...right?

Like some already said, we are animals.

And we are not the only animals who have a language or a society (elephants, one bull is the leader) and about solving complex problems. I wanna see you try to find your way in a termite nest.

any way, what makes us different from other animals? I don't know. We have been on the moon :D.

We're not afraid of vacuum cleaners.

They are.

Not plants or fungi, right? Mammals, right? Animals.
