...do they exclude each other? why? or do you mean "anarchy" with "freedom"?

good comment, I would say, democracy is freedom, including freedom of the others, so this is kind of a problem

I thought a democracy was a way of soliciting approval for society-wide agreements over the definitions of acceptable behavior, applying the principles of one person:one vote and the majority rules, with secure protections from discrimination or onerous loss of freedoms for the minorities.

Freedom is a bird soaring; the inalienable right to have only natural restrictions (gravity, second law of thermodynamics, etc) apply to the individual.

I never would have imagined a democracy that tolerates significant restrictions on personal freedom, enacted by democratically elected representatives, but my country of birth has become one and I'm not sure what to do about it.

not an easy question to answer! i think there can be real freedom in democracy. It depends what your looking for and want.

Indeed, who says you can't have both?

And in many cases there is freedom only because of Democracy.

How interesting that so many people want Freedom without any strings. It's true that no one likes their government putting laws upon the people, but society would be a mess if everyone went around doing ANYTHING they wanted without regard for others.

Government's purpose is to organize and provide for society and it's needs and to be fair to ALL.

Sir Winstone Churchill (Prime Minister of Briatain during WWII) said:

Demorcracy is the worst form of government. Besides all the rest.

In a way I think that sums it up. A readers digest article I read one explained democracy further in an example of a town who got involved in local body elections full out as their council sucked and it summed it up nicely. We get the government we deserve. ie most of us dont know the issues dont write to our politicians dont keep them honest. That's simple in countries where that works easily but people are apathetic but can be difficult for others

I would rather have freedom without democracy, than a democracy without freedom.
