My father was shot down over Germany during that period, as a member of the Army Air Corp, then the US Air Force, so I would have to say Yes.

December 7, 1941 when Japan bombed us. Ended in April 1945 with Europe, and August 1945 with Japan. I think I have these dates right. The war started in Europe long before we got into it. I think around 1939. That is when Hitler started his killing of the Jews.

Actually, the systematic annihilation of the Jews did not begin until later in the war.

Thanks for the note. I think the Jews were being rounded up early on. Put in Polish ghettos and later in concentration camps. The killing did start later but I don't know exactly when that started.

While there were many murders of Jews committed by the SS Einsatzgruppen during the early part of the war, these were carried out without official sanction. It wasn't until early 1941 that this group was given an official directive to carry out these mass murders and it wasn't until the Summer of 1941 that Auschwitz was given its true function. Even then, no official directive was given for the extermination of the Jews until Jan 20, 1942 at the Wannsee Conference which was called to coordinate the "Final Solution."

I think killing may have started in early 1940, but don't quote me.

No Andy - your teacher is making the whole thing up just so you'll have to memorize a bunch of dates and not bother the grownups.

Now - get back to studying and stop bothering the grownups.

Who are you to tell me not to bother the grownups, how old do you think I am? For all I know you could only be 13, so maybe you should stop bugging the grown ups.

HAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! You are new aren't you.... With a question like that--don't talk to grown-ups like that!!
