Why would a church have a black congregation?
I thought you folks were largely done with the racist thing?
I hope no one was hurt.
It is said that 11:00 on a Sunday is "the most segregated hour in the United States." Few congregations, white or black, have substantially diverse members.
I'm not a Christian myself, but I used to be in my youth. I seem to remember it was all about loving thy neighbour and treating others as you would like to be treated.
This seems to be a strange way of showing it.
Then again perhaps it is just me, it had been a long time, and I may have forgotten some of the rules :)
Not noticeably. It is still the most omnipresent factor of life for a huge segment of the population. Hate crimes continue, and hate groups proliferate. One school of thought is that the high incidence of gun murders in this country is linked to white fears of blacks going back to the days of slavery. Certainly the perception of black men in this country is that they are dangerous and uncontrollable. The few that aren't in jail, that is.
Even in otherwise very integrated neighborhoods, the churches don't seem to be.
Well just one more reason to add to my dislike of Christians.
If they can't even get the basics right, like love and tolerance, there is not much hope for the rest of the stuff they are supposed to believe.
You should have seen the justifications for slavery that otherwise 'Christian' people came up with. And I am sure you are familiar with the works of Dickens.
I remember reading various rubbish about something going back to Noah's day and one of his sons being "different" or something and out of favour. Did not pay too much attention as it seemed so pathetic.
The Mormon Church used that particular Bible story to justify its institutional racism, which did not allow African Americans to become priests. The breadth of the effects of this policy can be better understood once you realize that almost all Mormon men are priests. They have no paid clergy, but rather a laity with broad powers to perform religious rites. Essentially, the male head of any household becomes a priest, as well as others male members of that house. Except for African American households, that is.
They held that people of color were the descendents of Ham and therefore cursed:
"The sons of Noah who went forth from the ark were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan. These three were the sons of Noah; and from these the whole earth was peopled. Noah was the first tiller of the soil. He planted a vineyard; and he drank of the wine, and became drunk, and lay uncovered in his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside.Then Shem and Japheth took a garment, laid it upon both their shoulders, and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; their faces were turned away, and they did not see their father's nakedness. When Noah awoke from his wine and knew what his youngest son had done to him, he said, "Cursed be Canaan; a slave of slaves shall he be to his brothers." He also said, "Blessed by the LORD my God be Shem; and let Canaan be his slave. God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem; and let Canaan be his slave." After the flood Noah lived three hundred and fifty years. All the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died. (Genesis 9:18-29)"
So is the curse of pastoralist Cain who slays his agriculturalist brother Abel for fencing in his grazing lands.

That reference gave me an idea for a better punishment, haha. We make them do fund raisers for the Church like 'Fixin to learn the Racist' where you throw balloons filled with Mayo and Mustard at them in a stockade, for added effect we can write "Reality" on the balloons. Then for the next 5 years they have to mow the Church's lawn while that prison guard from "Cool Hand Luke" looks over them.
