If Europe had any balls they would have admitted both the Ukraine, and Georgia to NATO. Then neither would be under any real threat of Russian attack. The EU should be using their own armies to defend their borders.

Russia has never attacked a NATO member nation. And it still will not if Georgia and the Ukraine are members. Russia is a bully, and bullies like to attach those that are weaker. If and assault on the Ukraine of Georgia meant certain war with NATO, then Russia would pass.

Why allow Russia to dictate NATO policy? Do the citizens of Georgia and Ukraine not deserve the same protections against agression as other NATO countries?

I don’t think US or EU should be involved in post-soviet affairs. Georgia, Ukraine, Russia , Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and the rest of post Soviet states – have their borders determine by the Soviets authorities, during the Stalin’s regime. So we can say that they artificially defined by the Stalin’s wish. In 1936 Transcaucasia Soviet Socialist Republic which was a part of Soviet Union was divided in to Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan in honor of this event Georgia got Abkhazia and South Ossetia, even though it was land of Abkhaz and Ossets, Azerbaijan got Nagorno-Karabah , even though it was home of Armenians. It was a Stalin’s wish. In 1954 Soviet Union celebrated 300 anniversary of unification of Russia and Ukraine, and Primer Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine as a present. Vilnus was given to Lithuanians after Soviets occupied the city and took it from Poland. Half of Poland was chapped and given to Ukraine and Belarus. Part of Moldavia left of Dnester river, was an Ukraine and was given to Moldavia after it was taken from Romania in 1940. All of these were not an issues during the Soviets time because all the border change went inside of one particular country, with addition to some Soviet block satellites nations. All this things happened behind the Iron Curtin. 1989/91 brought us fall of Communism in Europe and Soviet Union in particular and all ‘Stalin’s Geography’ (fake borders) become real. This is why we had issues in Georgia (1992 and 2008), war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 1990’s , Problems in Moldova in early 90’s , divided Ukraine and etc, etc, etc. Do US and EU want to inherit these issues, I do not think it could be a good idea. We are not ones who can decide, future Ossetia or Abkhazia , to who Crimea need to belong and etc. It need to be decided by the countries which involved in particular issue. Otherwise we would do what Stalin used to do – create fake geography.

It is my opinion that what occurred with the USSR is irrelevant to the current issues. Once a nation has become independent, and especially an independent democracy, it becomes an entity that deserves protection from threats looking to dissolve it's sovereignty.

It is irrelevant because the area was recognized internationally to be a part of Georgia. Once it was recognized internationally how it got there seems less relevant.

In this case why US and EU supported independence of Kosovo.

I am totally agree with you (waugs).

So what the people who live there think is irrelevant? And only what outsiders have done to them in terms of creating their borders counts? Seems like a recipe for disaster to me.

Like the border between Palestine and Israel. An look how well THAT little idea has been not working out.

(Artificially imposed by non-residents)

I don't think Georgia and Ukraine are truly democracies. Governments were crush it's opposition, and try do be in power by any means. And in case of Saakashvili, he is child and a relative of former Soviets party leaders. Same Soviet bureaucrats only with a new mask. They are people who will do anything to stay in power.

Fair enough.

If some defense contractor believes that there is ONE MORE DOLLAR to be squeezed out of American coffers ... you damn straight we'll be going to war there. They'll just start passing more bucks to the Republican party ...

Now who's making comments beneath whom?

I don't hate America - I love my country enough to PAY ATTENTION to what's going on. I hate what the Republican party has turned it into. War hawks, lying, twisting, crapping all over the the United States Constitution and SMILING while they do it. All they have to say is "Christian" "Conservative" and "Freedom" and you believe EVERYTHING they say. Hook, line and sinker.

They tell you who to like, whom to dislike, what to eat, what to think, what to say, when to say it. Hell, neocons probably don't take a crap until given the all clear notice on Fox News.

Awesome rebuttal.

hay man, just because someone is against corruption in their country that doesn't mean they don't care about their country

That is because you are an inherently mean person.

Except you're not rattling any little cages, you're just making yourself look ignorant.

You're against corruption? I thought you supported the Bush machine? Or is this like freedom and liberty, you support the concept but not the actuality?

What about her comment leads you to believe she hates the USA, MikeHend? Do you know what the term, "non sequitur" means? Feel free to consult a dictionary.

She can't help it. She just has the misfortune to have believed all that shit about freedom and justice and the US of A she was taught in school.

Oh yeah - he was another bastard that screwed up this country so bad he KNEW he couldn't win re-election. He did some GREAT things socially, namely following up with the Civil Rights laws in the south. But that was about it.

His war record was despicable. He didn't like bad news - wouldn't listen to HONEST advice, wouldn't listen to people who KNEW what war really was. So he surrounded himself with military staff and generals that only told him what he wanted to hear. And that's why Vietnam became the mess it was. EXACT same thing Bush did with the entire lead up to Iraq. He had Colin Powell telling him the truth - but he didn't want to hear the truth. He only wanted to hear what would lead him to war with Iraq. Borders on treason when it comes to a president.

The difference between Johnson and Bush however - Bush has a MUCH better Propaganda Machine.

If the Ukraine joins NATO the USA will be obligated to defend that country, as will all NATO members. CDog is right.

sillynilly, on the other hand, is wrong.

You want war with Russia? They do not need to invade, they can just turn of the gas.

The Ukraine doesn't get a choice. They have to be accepted into NATO. Which, despite CDogs sabre rattling posture, we would be foolish to do.

Russia does not desire a war with USA or Europe, If we were at war with them, they won't have where to sell their gas, nor will they have the import products from European nations.

Trust me Russia wants a war with us just as much as we want a war with them. However they are trying to cast their shadow over the former USSR countries in the area in hopes that they can make them their satellites. I think Ukraine and Georgia would have been protected within NATO, but as we can well see the overconfidence of some leaders can have devastating consequences. We can only hope the Ukrainian leaders are wiser than the Georgians and find a better way to get Russia out of their hair.

No the USA is trying to stir up trouble between Europe and Russia. Russian politicians are trying to rebuild pride in the Russian citizens and play right along. It is called "the politics of fear"

yeah just one problem there as far as I know Russian citizens view the war in Georgia as US citizens view the war in Iraq.

If people suggested that in regard to Germany invading Poland in 1939, would more lives have been saved or would more lives have been lost?

USSR when dismantling shouldn't have gone to the level of hostilities among newly indepent states, former soveit states should have stayed in friendly bilateral relations and have had coalition like EU or Gulf states.

Dirty hand infiltration of imperialist/empire vultures have created hatred among former USSR states.

Americans have always been easy to be fooled in to wars, had it not been the case,we didn't have use of nukes in history, and present day wars of Afghanistan & Iraq are still ongoing.

Having said that, I don't think America will every have direct conflict/war with Russia,if it happened,it will be due to push by Brits.

I have to agree, we could never win that one.

The correct answer is No. The US should not rush to defend Ukraine militarily. It has no strategic value to us. As for NATO, its purpose is primarily to defend western Europe against a massive invasion or nuclear attack, not to make small scale wars against Russia to defend non-member states. Ukraine is a weak country unable to contribute in any significant way to the defense of Europe, and it would be inappropriate to make them a member just to poke a stick in Russia's eye. Any American leader that suggests that we would go to war against Russia in that case should be marked as incompetent to hold office.

It is a complex issue but having lived for some time in Ukraine I think better that these slavic nations should hammer things out between themselves.

No why should the US stick its nose into the whole wolds business only reason the US would be goto and stick their nose in russian business is for the oil...

How many people here have been to russia I have been to a lot of the old eastern block countries including the Ukraine most people in them countries still have a great like for Russia ands its people the EU would never side on the us with russia it has too much to loose most of the oil and gas in europe come from russia American should deal with its own problems first how many people in the us are so poor that the rich did not want free medical care in europe we have it how many people are wrongly convicted for crimes because the colour of their skin.

How safe is the street you live on before going to warm deal with problems like helping your own people the richest country in the world with the amount of poor people .
