It was pretty clear from the git-go that this Pope thought Vatican II dangerous and radical, and would have a very conservative, longing-for-the-days=of-the-Inquisition-type reign.
I still think it unlikely that the Church in America will ever become conservative enough (operative word, 'enough') to produce a Pope, however. It will still be full of mavericks who secretly ordain women and gays, take stands against wars, and generally act as if they had a conscience.
Take a look at the history of the Catholic Church in America. It has been such an agent for progressive thought that priests have been routinely threatened with excommunication. Two very recent examples:
This last priest has the support of the National Coalition of American Nuns--who have also spoken out to call for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney!
And of course, there were the radical priests of the sixties and seventies, including those bishops who started Call to Action. (belonging to Call to Action is an excommunicable offense under this pope).
The radicalism of the American Church pretty much is why common thought on the matter is that there will never be an American Pope.
This is typical. When the whole altar boy abuse scandal came to light, the Papacy realized that Cardinal Law had repeatedly relocated priests so they could avoid the angry parents.
What did Pope John Paul II do with Cardinal Law? He promoted him and moved him to the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.

"Rat singer" is a major league moron in an outdated and repressive religion.
Why anyone would take notice of hom except for stupid blind obedience to the RC creed is a mystry to me.
Ex Hitler Youth, and boy don't it show!!!
No need to use the Hitler argument, judge the guy as he is today, not what he did as a child.
I really doubt he got promoted just for saying that! :-)
