It has never ceased to amaze me how some people appreciate what is communication. If one communicates a view, what it means to the author does not matter what matters is how it is understood.
It is ridiculous to say for the cartoonist to say it is not racist if some readers find it offensive.
What is communication if you cannot get the reader to understand. If he understands it another way form what you intend, you have not communicated well.
I understand that The Post is getting tons of angry calls, and that even Post employees found it offensive. Of course, you have to consider the source. The Post makes The National Inquirer look like good journaliss.
I know and it will never go away until we all feel secure about who we are. I also know that just because I believe I am not racist does not mean that a person could find a remark I make racist.
If you are raised in a racist society, you are by definition racist. There is no way to avoid the culturally embedded expressions, and no way to avoid assimilating them if only on an unconscious level.
One can only struggle against it or give in to it, no matter what color you are.
Canada has its own race problems. I can remember asking my mother why people would cross the street rather than walk past us on the sidewalk when I was a child living in Hull, Quebec. She gave me some answer that didn't make sense, but eventually I figured out that the only thing they hated worse then English speakers were Americans; and the only thing they hated more than Americans were Native Americans. It is the Western European legacy to the world, racism, and rears its ugly head wherever Western Europe colonized.
This statement is inherently racist, are not all cultures racist to some extend? I am also a foreigner and as you can see I am not allowed to comment on things that happen outside of my country. I stand by my earlier statement "racism will never go away until we all feel secure about who we are" that goes for the person doing the discriminating as well as the person who is the victim of discrimination.
Not really. Some cultures were anything but. The Hawaiians before missionaries spring to mind. The Chinese. Their prejudice was not about being of a different color, but of not being Chinese--born to the Middles Kingdom, halfway between heaven and earth. Or many Native Americans tribes, such as those that fed the Pilgrims so they did not starve to death (bad judgment on their part!) The ancient Egyptians, who did not discriminate based on color--Nubians were welcome to hold any position.
There is the we/they divide in all cultures. Western Europe was pretty unusual in basing it solely on skin color. That is worse than basing it on language, where you were born, slave/free status, what you eat, or any of the other markers that have been used by various people because it cannot be changed. It is based on an unchangeable attribute, not on a choice.
No, the Europeans discriminated on a lot of things, skin color was only one of them. The very reason the Pilgrims came to America was because the Dutch would not allow them proper jobs when they were in Holland. Discrimination is bad, and racism is not solely based on skin color.
The statement "If you are raised in a racist society, you are by definition racist" is discriminatory. And to be sure, I let you know that I do not take offense, but it shows to me you have some unresolved issues in that regard. I am quite capable of realizing that I am not even close to perfect, but I equally know that I am not racist. Even if I were your statement would still be racist of course.
I didn't say that was the only form of discrimination that Europeans practiced, I said that they were the only ones who made it a legacy to the world.
Of course you are racist. So am I. So is my black friend from the South Side of Chicago. So is the Japanese kid I used to date. It is the INEVITABLE result of being raised in a racist society. And Western Europe, through their colonialism, spread that aspect of their societies to all corners of the world. Dark people were inferior, and Western Europe made sure the whole world knew it.
Where's the quote? I don't remember ever seeing any such thing--and especially not from a real right-winger like phase.
How does the Post's echoing racist cartoons of the past 150 years by equating a Black man to a chimp differ from your constant references to the mythic "n--ger musk" by constantly referring to the President of the United States of America as 'BO"?
Our government bankrupted us, whether Republican or Democrat. We the sheeple are to blame for not standing up, for not making the government fear the will of the people. We have been taught that the government rules us no matter what the Constitution says. Monkey in a cartoon? Who cares? Get to the real picture people! Take back what is ours!
My only real problem with it is the fact that they didn't make the link to the attack chimp very well. I haven't been following that story very well, and didn't even know that that chimp had been shot.
There are political cartoons implying Lincoln was an ape. General McLellan called him such on several occassions. It's an old insult in American politics, and anyone who says this is a racial shot at Obama is full of shit.
Remember the "lipstick on a pig" story? The responses to both stories show that there are a lot of people in both parties who believe that racism like sexism is not dead, just because you and I didn't see it as racism.
Personally I did not think it was distasteful that Obama was portrayed as a monkey, I thought it was distasteful that he was shot.
You can't ask us to "like or dislike" a false premise. The New York Post published a cartoon that SOME people feel equates the President with a chimpanzee. But if it does, it is only by implication. The cartoon does not explicitly equate the president, as on it's face it equates the "author" of the stimulus (which the president was not) to a chimpanzee.
Even the cartoonist said, "If it was anyone it would be Nancy Pelosi" (which is, of course, equally troubling).
As Plawler has pointed out the cartoon does NOT equate the President with a chimp.
You Yanks are in for a rough four years. Each and every joke or piece of satire aimed at the Democrats will be scanned for the teeniest hint of the dreaded 'racism'.
(The chimp in the cartoon looks female to me and may represent Ms Pelosi who actually wrote the bill. Cue: screams of SEXISM. The sisterhood run around hysterically).
I will say this, if the monkey were wearing a t-shirt that said Obama, I'd be right there with you in being offended for him. But anyone who follows news and can think for themselves can see it was directed at Congress and that porkulus bill and had nothing to do with Obama, who didn't right the bill at all.
If you insist on being offended, do it for the poor taste the paper showed in regard to a tragic situation but don't feign outrage over something that isn't even there. You cheapen real racism when you make such a fuss over a non-issue.

The Huffington Post was the only publication I could find that reprinted the cartoon.

I thought it was distasteful, but I don't believe it should be censored either.

Those responses show racism has not gone totally away, else we would not have seen those reactions.
Racism is the elephant in the room here in the States. Anyone who thinks it no longer exists is white, upper middle class, and usually male.
I know and it will never go away until we all feel secure about who we are. I also know that just because I believe I am not racist does not mean that a person could find a remark I make racist.

I can truly say I am not a racist, I have given it a lot of thought and this is one thing I know for sure.

Not at all, that's how.
Which is perhaps why he doesn't find the cartoon at all offensive. ;o)

[2 points] 3 years ago by deleted user ReplyEven though there is a documentable history of such slurs being used racially in journalism--which any editor should, and almost certainly does, know?
It was racist. Your opinion doesn't change that.
And so begins the much predicted "any slight of Obama policies will be called racist" portion of this term.
However, I've come as close to defending this awful cartoon as I wish to. I'll not comment on it further.

The cartoonist should be sacked or maybe the editor who authorised it's publication should be sacked.
It isn't funny it's racist and it could incite violence.
I have to feel sorry for Obama, taking on this ass hole of a job.
Obama needs support, he is trying to get all of you/us out of this shit.
It would be good if the media could show some respect for the President.
Respect is something that has to be earned. In time Obama may earn lots - but imo he has not done so yet.
