The US has 715 per 100,000 people in Jail. Yet the crime rate seems to similar to the Netherlands (where I am from) who imprison 112 per 100,000 people. It is working alright.
I have scene wonder stories with people who have went into prison and became much better people for it, so in my eyes it must be very effective....

yep, it is.
While people are in a US, or any other, prison they are not committing crimes against the public.
By that logic we should have all people in jail, then the crime rate would be zero.
