*That* New Yorker cover.... Ask a Question

Saw this first thing this morning. It was just satire, but OH, so poorly executed. If it had been done well, I doubt there would have been so many complaints.

Agreed. There was one other thing that struck me. The thick lipped mrs. Obama with her Afro hairdo - she looks quite stereotypical that way. If your point is to depict Baracks alleged muslim/terrorist sympathies I see no need to use racial stereotypes.

Gawd, I only noticed the turban, but not the thick lips!!! And I thought I was the most non-racist person on ask500!!! Duhhhh.... o.O

That was part of the point - people SEEING them through racial stereotypes. The cover depicted them EXACTLY as the fear-mongers claim them to be: radical Muslims who hate America, determined to see the US destroyed and executing the famous "terrorist fist jab" (as labeled by Fox News) in the Oval Office. FABULOUS satire! Once viewed it SHOULD have jelled in everyone's mind exactly how outrageous such beliefs are. Unfortunately it seems that political correctness has consumed America these days. People seem to be unable to see beyond what is right in front of them.

I'm going to frame mine when it arrives.

I Guess as a non-american I did not fully understand exactly what was the thing about this cartoon that outraged some people obviously. Satire often means walking on a thin line between being offensive and being very funny, but you need to understand the circumstances in order to see the humor.

Slight difference. One is a political figure who actively destroyed his country while (believing that he was doing 'right' and 'good') engaging in mistaken beliefs about the world and starting a war he shouldn't have. The other is a religion.
