I can't stand dubbed movies. You lose so much from the original actor's vocal inflections. Don't believe me? Put on a DVD of a favorite film, and switch over to the Spanish or French soundtrack. You almost want to flinch. Give me the subtitles every time. Then again, my sister and sister-in-law would sooner stab their eyes out than have to "read" a movie. Sad thing - I wanted them to watch "Amelie" so bad I couldn't stand it. Great film.
I take sides with your sister and sister-in-law because even when the subtitles are in English (as they often are in silent films) I still don't get as much out of a film as I would if there was a voice track. Don't get me wrong, I thought the acting of the Gish sisters was mesmerizing in "Orphans of the Storm," but to be honest they are all I remember of the flick. I totally forgot it was about the French Revolution until I just checked the wiki. Voices, in a language I understand, might have made the film more memorable.
I don't like foreign subtitles if the movie is in English. If the movie is in a foreign language then I far prefer English subtitles to dubbed voices. It's distracting to watch lips move differently to voice like in a Kung Fu movie.

Same thing, isn't it?

Depends on what you mean by subtitles. If the film is in English, I don't want English subtitles on the video; although I know some people who are ESL like this. If the film is in another language, I'd rather have English subtitles than have the speak get dubbed.
