They do not worship any false god if they are true atheists. That is the very definition of the class of people you are asking about! Of course there are those in any group who will succumb to misguided thinking, however. What about the religious Right in America who conflate their religion with politics, money, science and themselves? I think you will find that atheists are less prone to this failing than those.
On the contrary. Everyone, even atheists, put their faith, trust and hope in someone or something. Where the faith is, there is that person's god. Actually, I'm more interested in the comments on this question than actually getting it up for a vote. Thank you for yours.

[1 point] 1 year ago by deleted user ReplyAn interesting analogy which is valid for some people, for example me:-)
I am an atheist, but I find religion fascinating, more like the way someone might watch their favorite tv shows like "the Office" or something. It can be very interesting at the same time it is abhorrent or fun or _____ (fill in blank). It is a very human thing.
Agree

LOL--right!
hilarious.
Everyone is a slave to something..hopefully Jesus, but there is also sex, drugs, pornography, booze, money..you name it! everyone is in a search for something! There was a saying that everyone has a hole in their heart they are trying to fill!
self
If you havent had something, nothing needs replaced????
You have NO faith in ANYTHING or ANYONE? It must be a very hollow existence.
how so??
you didn't say faith, you said God
I don't know. I'm not an atheist so I can't answer this. Any of you folks that aren't atheists, how can you honestly answer this?
As I wrote to "eyeontheball", I'm actually more interested in the comments on this one. I don't really expect it will make it to a vote. And you're right, no non-atheist can answer this question, and each atheist's answer will only reflect their position.
so how do you come on with the comment at the first of the list here--they all have to believe in something--how do you know this if you are a non- atheist, you cant speak for them.
Wagus' analogy to a disinterest in bowling is pretty much on target except that people often assume you are interested in bowling and when they find out you're not they assume you're evil or defective in some way. In fact patriot just said it, if you don't believe in god then you're an addict of some sort. Total BS. By the way patriot, people can be addicted to their religions.
The Flesh and all its desires. The carnal mind is emnity with God. The thing is.. if their were no God, their would be no Atheists, and if you really think about it, their is no such thing as an atheist, just Agnostics,, which means .. to be an atheist means you have absolute ALL KNOWLEDGE of everything everywhere, their by making yourself omniscient and God. The very statement of, "their is no God" in itself is self defeating. If you think about it, their is no such thing as an athiest, just agnistics : Agnostics claim that it is not possible to have absolute or certain knowledge of the existence or nonexistence of God, alternatively, that while individual certainty may be possible, they personally have no knowledge. - yeah,,, I know,, makes no sence.. the Athiest test.. Creation.... CreatOR,,, DUH?!?!!?!

[1 point] 1 year ago by deleted user ReplyFor a Christian, as you once professed on this site to be, your answer doesn't sound very Christian. Please explain the disparity. I know you won't (or can't) answer this question, but I thought others should see it anyway so I posted it.

[1 point] 1 year ago by deleted user ReplyLOL, dismissing me as a troll is your way of, again, avoiding answering a simple question. Anyone who reads the question I asked of you will agree that it's a sincere question and not, as you say, "trolling."
haha!
I love this comment by truck. Because you realize that applying your own biases in an attempt to understand someone else's viewpoint invalidates your conclusion you cannot be Christian!
kevin: What you mean is, if there were no concept of "god" there would be no distinction called "atheist". We would simply all be atheist, that is "not theistic".
And you can't prove a negative: atheists want theists, rather, to PROVE the existence of the god they believe in. OUTSIDE their holy texts.
I am an atheist because it never occurred to me that there could be a god. Most people where I live do not care about religion. We had about 2 or 3 kids out of 30 in class who were religious.
Revsteve1958 , could you specify what you mean by "god in their lives"? Is it the most imporant thing there is, or something to focus on during your life?
why do you assume that people need a god? what is wrong with godlessness?
Look at the question closely--it is contradicting at best. If there is no belief in God, then ther is no God in there lives.
People...the question is wrong! It should read and correct me if I'm wrong..."what is the purpose of their lives". The way the question is asked currently is either manipulative (like most christian doctrine) or just plain stupid (no comment). Why is it that Christians feel compelled to sign up the world. Maybe because they're guilt ridden? I'm an atheist and my purpose in life is to provide for my family and be a productive citizen. Don't tell me Jesus wrote that into my life as I have never believed in him nor will I.
IT TAKES MORE FAITH TO HAVE NONE!
more faith in what?
If you have no religous faith you believe that life ends when you die. That means your time here on earth is important and that everyday counts as if it were your last. Like myself, there are millions of people who also believe this and that it does take a lot more faith in an individual to believe that when they are done...they are done and not moving on to some other level or judgement arena, or cloud basket, or whatever it is that Christians believe.
LOL, if I believed every day here on this earth could potentially be my last day in existence, I certainly wouldn't be spending my invaluable time here on this website (or on the internet for that matter). In addition, I feel sorry for anyone who believes that this limited human existence is all that there is.
geertz - that was awesome.
I cant answer this question
There is no answer really. What I can't figure out is why Jesus has to be totally connected to God in many of the minds of the pollers here.
It is the narrow definition from their religious doctrine that gives them that idea.
I can't say as I am agnostic, but I believe that in essence all religions have something right about "God". There is no one religion that is greater than any other. When you boil down the common beliefs to the lowest common denominator, they all pretty much just say that there is a "greater consciousness" in our universe that set into motion the chain of events that created us. I believe in that.
Call it a mix of science and religion supporting each other, if you will.
There can be no honest answer to this flawed question as many others pointed out. I cannot vote and give a meaningful answer, and the people who do vote are only looking in the mirror at their own propensities.
LOL ... so true, which is why my vote went to "Science".
... and in that mirror you probably see the atheist with the white wildly uncombed hair and big mustache looking back at you, winking in "relative" agreement. :)
This question is fallacious.
Someone pushed the idea that there are no atheists, only agnostics, which I find a little silly. It may seem like agnosticism is the only reasonable choice since we cannot know for sure that there is no god - but as many people already pointed out it is impossible to prove the non-existence of something. You cannot disprove the notion that there is a Celestial Teapot in orbit between the Earth and the sun, but you would not claim to be agnostic about it. The onus is on the person making the claim for teapot's existence to provide evidence. Atheism is saying with a high degree of probability that there is no God. If you cannot make a statement of that nature about something for which there is exactly no evidence then you cannot make that statement for anything and we are all agnostic about the existence of everything imaginable, in which case the term becomes meaningless.
As an atheist I live my life the same as anybody else. I try to operate based on what I know. When I don't know something I try to make a judgment call based on the probability of each case.
In terms of "meaning" my life does not derive meaning from any external source, it is up to me. My life is an end in itself, it is not a trial run and there are no erasures or retries. There is no evidence to suggest that you will ever get a chance at another life, which is why it is important to make the best of this one.
Questions of morality are inherently questions of suffering, with the minimization of suffering and the maximization of happiness being the key goals. The Ethic of Reciprocity (Golden Rule) applies.
Finally, a quote from a book by Dan Barker called "Losing Faith in Faith":
"I have something to say to the religionist who feels atheists never say anything positive:
You are an intelligent human being. Your life is valuable for its own sake. You are not second-class in the universe, deriving meaning and purpose from some other mind. You are not inherently evil—you are inherently human, possessing the positive rational potential to help make this a world of morality, peace and joy. Trust yourself."
Peace.
well said...touche
Everyone has their own "God". You can't put all atheists into one category.
