Should there a global standard version of English? (instead of UK English, US English, etc.) Ask a Question

I don't see the need to have a single version of English, it's the same language, minus the dialects and words used in any English culture. There are English universal words though. It's something to think about though... plus I think the British accent is very cool :)

Some accents from the UK are cooler than others......some are not as pleasant on the ear. Just as some US accents are easier to listen to than others. The Aussie accent vary a great deal too- some are simply comical.

I would not be in favour of trying to establish a global English language.

Spelling varies between the Queen's English and American English. English spelling is idiosyncratic enough without there being two correct spellings for the same word, depending on yuor location!

That aside, no, regional variations should not be standardized out, and pretty much cannot be. It is the nature of language to evolve and change.

Although if you want to be a newsreader (in America they call it a news caster!) you really need to have what is, in your country, considered to be unaccented English.

If you think there is a single "US English" then maybe you should get out more.

In time the number of languages will diminish, I do not think that spelling is important part. As long as I am able to understand what you are trying to say.

We need an international standard for spelling, but I can't see any reason to label spoken dialects as less correct.
