Cubapetroleo, the state-owned Cuban oil company, said Friday, the country may have more than 20bn barrels of oil in its offshore fields - more than double the previous estimate.
Cuba's share of the Gulf of Mexico was established in 1977, when it signed treaties with the US and Mexico.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) recently estimated that as much as 9bn barrels of oil and 21 trillion cubic feet of natural gas could lie within that zone, in the North Cuba Basin.
However, you can buy a real Cohiba in Canada...and we buy oil from Canada...so here in the Detroit area, we could drive across to Canada and buy Cuban gasoline, too :)
It will go on to the global market. Whether we buy directly from them or not, it will get into the chain and impact global oil prices, including oil prices in the US. So in the end it is just a political statement if we don't.

I think you're right...don't we still get oil from Venezuela? And Venezuela is also Cuba's biggest oil trading partner...ah, the global economy again!
