Should the name of the planet uranus be changed? Ask a Question

5 Answers

Apparenty it is derived from the Greek "ouranos" meaning "sky".

I don't see a problem with it

Ah interesting, I have a Greek song somewhere with the word ouranos in its title, now it makes sense!

As with the other planets, it is the Roman version of the name of a Greek god (Ouranos/Uranus, father of Kronos/Saturn, father of Zeus/Jupiter).

It's correctly pronounced as YUR-ah-nus, not yur-A-nus.

It only sounds whatever you think in English. Lots of Scientific names sound really foul in other languages.

Must they be changed in to satisfy speakers of those languages?.
