Forcing us to learn English hasn't seemed to help much on that. Which is, after all a foreign language, being the result of the head-on collision between Norman French and Anglo-Saxon. OR do you subscribe to the idea that someone from the British Isles found this continent a thousand years before 1066 and somehow paralleled the creation of English among the native languages here?
Uh... None of the above. I think it's much simpler than that. We could point out numerous ways that people whose native language was Dutch, French, Italian, German and other European languages added to a uniquely American culture. Even with racism, African language groups, Middle Eastern and Asian language groups have added to our American cultures. In the US, groups tend to integrate. (To our mutual benefit) Having a common language greatly helps that process.
Even in the best case, countries like China and Canada have problems with two major language groups. In the worst case, areas like the Balkans, Yugoslavia and Lebanon simply come apart.
If your point is that one language can produce political problems, I agree. But it can also solve those problems by producing more community cohesiveness.
My point is that English is a foreign language too. My grandmother spoke a language that was NOT foreign, despite the best efforts of the US Government to beat it out of her.
Tsalagi. Look it up.
So who cares what foreign language is used here? INCLUDING ENGLISH.
My great grandmother on my father's side spoke the Caddoan language. You don't have to look it up B^) She was Pawnee. I could still see her attitudes in my father. English was her second language. She was married at age 15 in 1894 and had 11 living children before she died at 43 in 1919.
So, culturally, our family is integrated into the US culture and we all speak American English. I don't understand what could possibly be wrong with this.
If somebody wants to get citizenship in the US then they should have to learn to speak, read, and write the English language. Other countries expect us to learn their language so why don't we expect them to learn ours? We spend massive amounts of money to print and make signs for other languages to survive in this country. Lets spend the money on more practical things not serving them when it was them who wanted to come here in the first place.
Because we're more about immigration than any other country. Because the majority of the people in this country are descended from people who did not speak English when they arrived. Some of my ancestors came to this country from England, others did not. And I will not spit in the eye of my ancestors just to appease a current political whim.
The only people who spend money on foreign language signs are those who want the money of immigrants.
Ballots should be made available in every language. Who knows? That "liberal immigrant" might actually want to vote Republican. And if he's not sure who is who - they just might ACCIDENTALLY vote for the Democrat. Look at how many Hispanic immigrants (who only spoke Spanish) voted for Bush in 2000 & 2004. It wasn't until the Republican constituency started throwing such a big fit about illegals and "English Only" that they switched to a Democratic Party majority. Their Catholic beliefs had them more in line with the philosophies of the Republican Party until their fellow Republicans turned on them with political attacks.

You just completely went against everything else you've ever said in here. And you want to call ME wishy-washy? Now you're flip-flopping on your own damn beliefs. The sad part is you don't even realize what you're doing.
So long as the Republicans have representatives like you, then I know their chances of returning to power is smaller and smaller each day.

well, probably yes.If you're going to be a citizen at least you should try to learn the language at first.
Nope. They should have to speak a native language. Why should one foreign language be favored over another?
For cultural integration. For greater understanding between cultures.
That sounds more "assimilation to a single culture" than understanding between them.
No, cultural integration implies each culture improving the other. It can not be one sided.

No, they should be able to speak Dutch and government should provide language (as well as culture and law) courses for free.
It should be required for citizenship in the United States...I cant really say it should be true for citizenship in ALL countries.
What have you got against mutes and blind people?
They can still read and speak. They just use different senses.
No correct should be: The ability to speak and read german should be a requirement for citizenship ;)
