Should Blacks receive Reparations for Slavery? Ask a Question

The Jews suffered the same fate and they got reparations and the USA went to there aide, so why not the Blacks, the native Americans don't pay taxes because of there situation, so why not the Blacks. It's a shame, but not to worry BO will fix this poop.

Thanks for that information. This really opens my eyes very clearly.

Of course BO would be against reparations. His mom is white. His dad's side of the family was in Kenya when slavery was rampant in the USA. He wasn't affected, so why would he be in favor of reparations?

I would LOVE to hear how the Jews got their reparations. And i don't know about your local Native American tribe, but mine pay taxes, are you sure the ones you speak of are not committing tax ovation.

You should read this article [http://www.bizjournals.com/twincities/stories/1997/04/21/editorial2.html]

Sorry man, West Germany did pay reparation to Israel and to Jews around the world who were directly affected by the Holocaust.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reparations_Agreement_between_Israel_and_West_Germany

That's not the U.S. now is it, you should have signified that it was Germany, since you are talking about American politics, i thought you were implying that the U.S. for some reason paid them.

Where did I imply the Americans paid them? It's not even my question, *I* don't need to signify anything.

Might I point out to you that Dadams brought up reparations to the Jews. You expressed incredulity. Didn't see either of you mention the US in regards that, only a pillock would think the Americans paid them.

Incidentally...a "tax ovation" would be a round of applause for tax. I think the word you are casting about for is EVASION.

How about Tax Ovulation - "laying an egg" in panic when you get your tax bill!

Btw, I love the word pillock, we use it a lot round here.

tax aviation?

That's when you fly through the forms in a carefree manner knowing that your deductibles will outweigh your liabilities.

Native's in Canada don't pay a cent of tax.

That's not true.

Under the Indian Act, Registered Indians don't pay provincial or fed taxes on personal property if it's on a reserve. Income earned on a reserve is also untaxed. Some of the tax details are left to individual provinces too, particularly taxes on automobiles.

I have to say no. Based on your analogy above about Jews receiving reparation, that would mean I should get them. I don't feel that, don't want it. I've talked to my Mum, she feels the same - and remember she is only one generation removed, how many generations removed would the black people be from their last slave relative?

My Gramps receives reparation in the form of a pension because he was there, he suffered, he lost his family and his home. I don't feel I am disadvantaged in any way because of what happened then, except I lost people I probably wouldn't ever have known anyway - that's sad but it doesn't affect how I live my life and the opportunities that are available to me.

I don't think people removed from the original atrocity, who have not been personally affected by it, have any right to expect anything.

I can understand where you are coming from, your third generation and you only speak from your family's experience, but blacks receive nothing and are still suffering from the psychological effects of slavery. You must understand that the Blacks have suffered the same effects of what the Jews have but openly its said they have every opportunity to be made whole, but privately are still oppressed even in your country, but Jews are not. If your Gramps had not gotten that pension to give your Mom/Dad a better start where would you be today,The Blacks ancestors didnt get the pension nor was it offered, it was said they all would receive 40 acres and a mule, but havent got it yet.The Jews would not be so well off if they werent offered that pension, to start there own business and rebuild what was left of there lives, should not the Blacks not even have a glimps of that being offered to them no matter how many generations have passed. So in other words slavery should just be forgotten, oops we're sorry for that wont happen again.Yeah Okay....

The only blacks that are suffering from the psychological effects of slavery are the trouble makers that want something for nothing. If there are any folks left that were slaves, fine. Get them a lawyer and take them back to Africa and help them sue the descendants of the tribes that captured them and sold them into slavery. The descendants of the slaves that are living in the US have no basis to put in a claim of any kind for reparation. Their families were set free and given the opportunity to a better life than what they would have had if they were all shipped back to where their descendants came from. If they didn't do good and chose to stay in a ghetto some where, that was their choice. History is teaming with stories of folks that instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they went out and made their own way and there are a lot of success stories.

agree

I agree also.

"Chose to stay in a ghetto somewhere" is kind of cynical, I think

One of my friends is moving back to the US beginning of next year. He tried talking another of our friends into moving to his old home town with him. He said I'd like to check it out first. When he came back, he told me that he was raised in an area like that. He'll never go back to something as low rent as that. It is like stepping back in time or more like a downgrade in living standards. He decided to stay here a while longer and hopes the dollar starts to rise in worth a bit. I don't think it is cynical at all and niether does my friend.

You have a lot to learn, who created the Ghetto's oviously your for the slavemaster and not the slave, Yes it is true that the slaves where sold by there own, but does the slavemaster get off scott free for the part he played, does he not have any responsiblity. Lets imagine that there was a young man and women walking around enjoying themselves, then they are captured put in chains, they have no idea what is going on, the woman is beat very badly, then RAPED over and over, then made to work for Free, taken away from their family.......now imagine they are WHITE....still think its the slaves fault.

Maybe there's a difference between slavery and extermination?

I disagree, he worked bloody hard when he got to the UK, he didn't start to receive his pension straight away. He came to a country that was already suffering overall after the war, faced discrimination, had to learn a new language. I'm not sure when he personally first received payment but it couldn't have been before 1953 when it was ratified by the West German parliament. By then he had become a chef, learned to speak English, got married, had a child and was working towards having his own business. No one gave him those things, he worked for every single one of them. The compensation was nothing more than a bonus, he was already doing pretty damn well for himself.

And he wasn't alone, they all did the same. What other choice did they have? Most European countries couldn't afford to support an influx of refugees, they had to help themselves. Israel was a slightly different situation but still, they were working hard for themselves. It's what they always did.

What good will reparation do now? If someone has the wherewithal to go out and make their life better, they'll do it money or not. It wont stop any discrimination - probably increase it. It's no kind of sorry, coming as it does from people who weren't involved in slavery. Those days needn't be forgotten, but compensate black people now for what happened...nope, just can't agree with it.

And i probably have an ancestor somewhere back in ancient Europe that was a Roman slave or something, so if the blacks get a monthly check, be sure to send me one too. With equality and all, it would only be fair if i received a check too.

From who? All the natty little folks that were involved in slavery are long gone. The people that keep bringing up this subject are just trying to keep firing up the trouble between the races.

I think if anybody should pay reparations, it should be the descendants of the tribes in Africa or the other countries that captured the people they sold to the slave traders.

So the slave traders didn't share in the guilt? Only those who sold people to them were guilty?

Both were guilty, what's your point? :)

Okay plawler, sue them too.

Acknowledging the past, giving deserved respect, and eliminating discrimination would be a step in the right direction. When I was visiting Vancouver, one of the things that impressed me was how they had integrated the First Nation into their history, were open about the mistreatment that had occurred, and had respect for the culture and integrated it into the mainstream. Respect and equality have a way of healing many wounds.

so true

Absolutely, yes! All former slaves should receive reparations.

How many are still alive?

Must be getting pretty long in the tooth if you guys did away with it in th 1860's!

Precisely. ;o)

Not their families.

Did I say their families? I did not. ;o)

I would say no to this one.

Like people have arguesd above the directly involved are all gone. Furthermore things can get pretty complicating after a few generations. Who exactly is "black" for instance? Obama? Well he is half white and the other half not descending from slaves as far as I understand.

Discovering about your own past can be unsetling. (White) Dutch friends of mine adopted two darker skinned children. Then they looked into their family history and found out their ancestors had been slave traders... There were even 3 small black heads in the family coat of arms. Another friend of mine is a physically disabled woman from Germany. Besides Jews, Roma, gays and political opponents also disabled people were prosecuted by the nazis. (The method of mass killing in gas chambers was first tested on disabled Germans). Now my disabled German friend told me her ancestors were nazis as well.

I do think we still see a lot of inequality and hidden or overt discrimination in our societies. Statistically "black" people in the US have far worse prospects. So I think it is dicrimination as well as poverty in general we need to tackle.

I was amazed to see this question appear and at first checked to make sure it was not some kind of dark humour that had gone over my head.

OK, so it was not a period of human history that we can be proud of, but then again, there are so many of those throughout history, you could claim and counterclaim and fill up every court in the world with silly cases until the end of time.

Should the RC church pay the descendants of the victims of the Spanish Inquisition?

Should the French pay the English for the land the Normans stole in 1066?

And who would you expect to pay, the Africans who could not wait to sell their "black brothers" fast enough for a few trinkets, they ship owners descendants, the companies or individuals that bought them.

This whole idea is farcical.

It was sad. So were many things. Get over it. Move on. Live for the future, not dwell in the past.

hey guys the past sometimes dictate the furture, caucasians love to say get over it move the past is the past, until it happens to them, then all hell breaks loose, take a dose of your own medicine and get over yourself.

What exactly "happens to them"?

Perhaps being taken prisoner by the Japanese and either tortured or worked and starved to death?

Perhaps having the Entire Northern third of your country destroyed by Norman invaders, every firld of crops destroyed, every farm animal slaughtered, all the people left to slowly starve to death?

Perhaps having your cities bombed flat night after night, with your people cowering in cellars or subways or anywhere they could hide - coming out in the morning to see if they had anything in the world left at all, and going to work a long day because the country needed them to?

These are just a few of the dozens of examples I could give.

Yes, I think I can safely say we have gotten over quite a bit.

Why don't YOU try thinking before adopting such an arrogant and self-righteous attitude???

When I first initiated this question I was talking about the slaves, not the Afro Americans...Okay people read the questions and try to give a educated answer not some poop.Contrary to popular politically correct beliefs RACISUM still exists and hides not under a sheet or pointy little hood or some Shaved head, but in a business suit in the boards rooms of cooperate America.

In other words, you just wanted to stir up a bit of trouble. Keep racism to the front.

We don't want it the biggest prize is heaven. You can't bring money with you when you die so forget it time enough and to late! The ones still benefiting off of slavery is gonna pay through gods eyes. There a saying in all this " Give me flowers when I'm living don't wait til I'm dead". Only people of color get treated badly.......
