I actually like the "easy" way it is here and that there are no "agressive" rankings and everyone is equal. why should an author have less stars, just because he/she does not have creative or interesting questions in the opinion of others? what about members like me, who do not have so many (any till now) questions, but anyway are active participants or just interested in the discussions? and in the end: WHY? why do we need rankings? it's not ebay, it's not about trust, it's just "some questions". this is just my opinion. I can imagine that a rating system of the questions itself (like questions which caused big discussions) could be interesting, but I strongly disagree on "author reputation"-rankings.
why, and especially: HOW should somebody abuse this service? I think he/she gets blocked already in two ways: 1) does not get enough points to get the question run 2) gets marked as inappropriate. but we don't need to know how often this happens to whom. anyway, we'll see what others think, maybe I am a minority. thanks for answering. :-)
The author could abuse the service if he is an "robot", flooding the system with fake questions or spam.
A user can abuse other user by the use of the commentary module (and that's a topic for another suggestion). =)
No system is able to avoid deliberate abuse - so far - so the idea (and that's all that it is) is to pay in reputation for the civility of the author and quality of its questions.
Mostly is not that different from a rating system for blog's posts.
About you being a minority... I don't know... If you are not, this feature would be one less thing for the Wondermill guys to worry about =D
I don't see any reason why not. There's ways to game the system already using multiple computers with different IP addresses to get questions to the top, but ultimately whats the point? A community rating system would create a way to encourage people to come back, besides the fact that they think the questions are interesting.
No. I think the question is the key component here. Not necessarily 'who 'in someones opinion is the author. I don't think you need to 'judge'/evaluate question-makers.Even if you don't agree with their question. There are all kinds of 'tricky' ways of doing everything ----but I think still what this site seems to be about is research. What are people thinking--what is important to them. I am going to love this site when the 'Ask 500'--become in actuality a 500 person feedback. As a marketing professional I find this site pretty interesting.
I still think it would be a nice feature for some of us, though. I rather subscribe to a guy that usualy makes a lot of questions I like to answer than someone who makes a lot of questions I can't relate to.
I am looking forward for the 500 person feedback also.
I strongly agree.
I was thinking about my question just now... it seems the functionality is almost already there.
When we add a "point" to the question itself it is stored somewhere in the database.
Maybe Ask500People could read those points added to put some nice "little stars" beside the names of authors.
Am I exaggerating on the future feature-list here?

I understand completely your way to see this matter.
A system of reputation would value author who use Ask500People seriously, without abusing the service or other users.
Anyway, vote as your conscience tells you to... This website is all about it - as I see it.
=)
