No more so than extinguishers in buildings. The car will work just fine with out them. You might have a greater risk of dieing or being hurt with out them too, but that is a different issue.

Until someone proves that they fail to help save lives there is only one answer to this ridiculous question.

dr1024, funny that you mention fire extinguishers in buildings. I was on a project to ensure that students in the UAE knew what a fire drill and extinguisher were in 2004! We filmed fire drills and reenactments of students using fire extinguishers to put out a variety of fires. The world is a big place with differing values.

No offence to the querist, but I'm amazed so many people thought this question was worth watching how other people answered. the answer is yes. But around 5-20% of people will answer no because they are feeling like being silly today for whatever reason.

So who voted this ridiculously brainless question up and why this one and not others please? Surely someone else thinks it wasteful that some great questions fall by the wayside because of questions like:

Do cars need wheels?

Do birds need to sing?

Does the sky look blue when it's sunny?

Does the sea taste salty?

Do dogs wag their tails?

Is Spain in Europe?

"But around 5-20% of people will answer no because they are feeling like being silly" -- There is another reason. Studies have shown that even in areas where it is required by law that you wear a seat belt, as much as 20% do not. Why they don't is beyond me, but they don't. Clearly seat belts are NOT a necessity for everyone.

In in response this was a question that I had posed to my students here in Doha, Qatar. You would not believe the attitude in some countries/societies to basic safety. I put this up to show my students that safety belts are a basic means of living in modern societies.
