It's not an uncommon thing, As, and not limited to religion. When I was canvassing, I frequently had people show me some article from a mainstream newspaper: "See they don't mention that here, so it can't be so." Like the S.F. Comicle, I mean Chronicle, was THE last word on information in the U.S.

The thing that I find annoying, and the prompt for the question, is that fact that you can win an argument and still have it make absolutely no difference.

Folks like this have this set of ideas, and no matter how much the prove how silly it is, they end up with a rather childish playground argument ... Well I know I am right, so whatever you say, you must still be wrong.

I do get your point about relyign on one source of media for your info though. Many people here read nothing but "Ruperts Rags" and thing they have a balanced view on world affairs.

Then again, if your "world" is soap operas and C-list celebs that probably works :(((

It's not only religion, Asroc. You can win a political argument with Jonmarc or Wingnutt or MikeHend or WiseOne or foxbaron and still have it make absolutely no difference.

Actually, I take that back. As with religion, you can't really "win" since they either start calling you names or retreat into the comment equivalent of sticking their fingers in their ears and saying, "La... La... La... I can't hear you!"

Good points!

The religious do not so much "retreat" to faith - its where they start and permanently reside. As a child I was taught about the trinity being just one god. When I politely pointed out the illogicality the good sisters told me that this was a mystery that we are not meant to understand. Just have faith!

IMO religion only survives because a large proportion of people do not do rationality.

You're right. A lot of people don't do rationality. We can see this in many other areas, besides religion. The supernatural, dowsing for water, alien abductions, witchcraft, astrology, convoluted conspiracy theories, etc.

Of course you won't. Because that would require actually thinking and forming a rational argument.

No, it is not. Unfortunately in the West, faith seems to come with a lot of baggage. Buddhists have faith, yet do not use that kill others in Buddha's name.

Criticizing wrongdoing is criticizing wrongdoing... it doesn't matter who is doing the wrong. Or do you feel the "West" is above criticism? Even if she's not "fair and balanced" in her criticism. that doesn't make her points invalid.

Seems to me that 'faith' is blind by definition. If something can be demonstrated there is no need for faith.

DUH! Whether losing, winning, or abstaining from religious arguments, faith will always be a factor. It sounds like the person asking this question is dissatisfied with the fact that the things that require faith can't be proven or explained. Hello? That's why the faith is necessary. Nothing about your religious arguments will change. It always comes down to whether you want to believe in something beyond our physical perception or not.
