Absolutely. Poor people are the ones that designed an economy that REQUIRES that ten percent of them be unemployed in order for that economy to function. <sarcasm/>

Absolutely. Poor people are poor because they are bad, lacking moral fiber, and GOD WANTS THEM THAT WAY TO PUNISH THEM. <sarcasm/>

Absolutely. Poor people are that way because they are lazy. ONLY a lazy person would work three different fast-food jobs for a total of 60 hours a week and another 20 in commute time. <sarcasm/>

Undecided... because sometimes they are and sometimes they're not. If I could be employed by someone who needs my services but I choose to continue to collect unemployment, it's my own fault I'm poor; likewise, if I have a high IQ but decided not to go to college, again it's my fault that I'm poor. If a micro-meteorite hit my leg and crippled me and I can no longer work but my disability hasn't started yet then it's not my fault if I'm poor.

I got news for you Chip. People have to have worked to be able to collect unemployment, and if they become unemployed for ANY reason other than lack of work (lay-off) they are practically guaranteed to not get it. Furthermore, quite well-to=-do people are just as likely to file for unemployment--maybe more so--thatn blue-collar people. I have NEVER heard a semi-profession--say, a software engineer--refuse to collect unemployment because he was too proud to do so; but I hear plenty enough blue collar folks make that claim.

AND whether or not one receives unemployment is ultimately at the discretion of the employer. The former employer can lie his ass off about someone quitting or being fired for cause so his insurance premiums don't go up. And many do. So unless you can afford an attorney, and have kept reams of documentation that no sane person would even think to acquire, you are fucked. No matter if your mortgage is due. Which, BTW, is another thing poor people don't get to have--mortgages.

When you misrepresent something, it destroys your argument.

"I have NEVER heard a semi-profession--say, a software engineer--refuse to collect unemployment because he was too proud to do so; but I hear plenty enough blue collar folks make that claim."

Isn't that further proof of stupidity? To be forced to pay into a system and then not collect what you have a perfect right to collect? Remember if those people are religious people who will not collect an unemployment check they earned, are they not practicing PRIDE, one of the Seven Deadly Sins?

P.S. I have collected unemployment many times, I cannot imagine someone having difficulty collecting it unless they are total assholes. Maybe they didn't get it because of some dumb thing they did like after getting the news everybody would be getting laid-off on a particular day, the self-righteous dude who wanted to save a little face told the boss something like "You can't fire me, I quit."

I have known people with such asinine levels of bravado. Well, when it comes time for filing their unemployment claim, if they were that stupid to say such an inappropriate thing they deserve to not get their unemployment check. In America people often put pride before common sense, so IMO they often get exactly what they deserve: nothing. :-)

We are all where we are and who we are because of the choices we make in our lives. There may be a very few exceptions to this but very, very few.

Funny then, that so many people who grew up in poor families have CHOSEN to become poor themselves? Do they know some perks of poverty that we aren't aware of?

Perhaps it is the subtle but ever-growing number of brain function deficits that we now know poverty to induce, beginning during gestation? And isn't it just LIKE those awful poor people to brain-damage their children on purpose like that!!

<sarcasm/>

Only people who have never truly been in want for any period of time think poverty is under the control of the poor.

The fast majority of those that want to migrate here (our countries) to escape poverty are denied, we are actively denying them the chance to escape poverty.

You've already presented that opinion, in the post I first responded to. My response was to ask what you think motivates people to choose poverty.

I grew up in a poor home, where dad was a drug-addled lazy b*st*rd who never even considered getting a real job, and mom worked every day of her life to keep us fed and pay the bills. My opportunities have been very difficult to find and take advantage of over my lifetime thus far...

And yet I have achieved a Bachelor's Degree (despite the nearly $100k in student loans) and still have been unable to find a job since I was downsized from my retail managerial position. I have been seeking employment for nearly 9 months now, and in this economy, if you do not have the WORK experience in your field, there is no chance you will get the job. Most jobs are for minimum wage and not even worth it considering the hours you must put in and the expectations placed upon you when you are working.

Yet, I am persistent and will find a job that will pay me a reasonable wage and keep me off of unemployment, which - thanks to certain senators - will cease to exist very very soon anyway.

Not all poor people.

This question is a truth turned around backwards. The truth is: One of the first things anyone can do to start climbing out of poverty is to take responsibility for your fate whether it's your fault or not. This attitude allows you to start thinking and acting in ways that allow you to escape poverty.

So the question is not factual or even opinion, but a chosen way of thinking.

The converse will put this question in perspective.

Wealthy people are responsible for their condition.

Often this is true except when their wealth was inherited.
