Perhaps. There are jerks in every category of human beings. Perhaps they are subject to pain due to arthritis or other physical problem. Perhaps they are simply taller than average. Perhaps they are trying to get a way from the annoying small child who keeps popping over the back of the seat in front and drooling on their lap. Etc.
Well they recline so people are entirely in their rights to recline. It might be annoying but it doesn't make the person a Jerk. I'd say the Jerks are the ones who complain and make everyone's days a headache.
This question seems to have spilt the world into two factions: Recliners, those who recline their chairs or don't and hate the complaining people, and Complainers, those who don't recline their chair or only will if the person in front of them it, and hate recliners.
It all comes down to space. Like in the Roman times, Space meant power, if you were a king of a big country you were seen as a greater king than those kings who had small space. Or if you were a common folk, then a bigger house meant you had more money, thereby more power.
It's good to have space. If we don't have enough we become upset, thats just natural. If one thinks they are being cheated of some space, or anything in life, they have every right to complain, within reason. If we lived in a world with no-one complaining, then everything would be of poor quality.
We should just not recline our seats to keep everyone happy. Yes you will have to sleep sitting up, just like everyone else. I did it on a bus in Norway, it was fine, I dreamt I killed Sylar using my samurai sword.
There may be exceptions, but if you require more room, and you know it, go one class up than normal.
Not when if the person in front you reclines their seat and it means that you can't actually fit into your own seat because of being tall. Then reclining your own seat doesnt make any difference either.
The people who are jerks are the ones who recline so that the top of their seat is pressing against my nose, thereby forcing ME to recline and become a jerk to avoid unsolicited rhinoplasty.
Someone else asked that same question today:

I was just on a flight where I was sitting a row back from the exit row. I guess the exit row didn't give the person in question enough room. Jerk!
Complain to the airline over the seat spacing.

if you want more room pay for first class.
Or just recline your own seat, and then you have the same amount of space you started with.
Those people who moan are the jerks!!

Can't recliners & complainers live in Harmony?

Well then kick his chair on a repeated basis until he moseys up.
Maybe, though apparently at least two people hated your response enough to vote it down (I voted it up).
Thanks.
