People at Fort Hood died from a surfeit of Political Correctness.

US authories were long aware of Major Hassan's odd behaviour and his contacts with extremist Imams. But they did not act as they feared being accused of being 'anti Muslim'.
That actually has an element of truth in it. Too bad the hysterical over-reaction to all things Muslim made that kind of political correctness necessary.
However, they were concerned because they (other psychiatrists at Walter Reed) thought it likely he was psychotic. In other words, he went postal.

I would word it slighly differently: a craven under-reaction to some things Islamic. It does, of course, demand a degree of political and moral courage for governments to acknowledge that a minority - a sizable minority - of Muslims are potential enemies. Pretending that this is not the case is so much easier.
If they feared being accused of being "anti-Muslim", then I think there is something wrong with their training.
Maybe they are over trained, trained so much that they loose their instincts and logic.
I think they should first protect their own life and the lives of others.
This man is sick, a sick psycho, It shouldn't matter if he is Muslim, Catholic, Buddist, Salvation Army. Someone should have done something about him, now it's too late.
There is also the concern that Mr. Hassan was really just wanting out of the Military. The military does not like paying for someones schooling ( especially the lawyers and doctors) and then have them try and leave the service instead of fulfilling their obligation. I think that had at least some part in not getting rid of him included in their reluctance to be seen as anti-Muslim.
People died because this guy didn't want to go to Afghanistan. He is a Muslim and didn't want to do what the American Army asked him to do. Most would not kill like this though. They guy deserves a fair trial and then the death penalty. Yes I know what I said.
Once upon a time there were American soldiers who did not want to go to Viet Nam. Many went to Canada. Some even came to Sweden and were treated as minor heroes in a country where pacifism and anti-Americanism both have some following. But none, as I recall, committed mass murder.
Major Hassan coul have gone to any one of several Islamic countries where he would have been welcomed with open arms.
