Well, I believe it is stifling creativity, but that is only if the artist is looking to make money, so it is kind of like artistic evolution. Eventually we'll be left with the artists who make music and film simply because it is what they love to do. If that causes a shortage of entertainment then maybe people will start commissioning artists to create the type of music or film they enjoy. Weird... I could ramble about it forever :)
I dont think it is stifling creativity, as a matter of fact I think it may be increasing creativity by allowing some bands to be heard by people who would potentially never listened to their music because no one wants to buy a CD of a group they have never heard of, you may download a song for free and listen to it though.
