Disagree. I think it's fear, rather than pain. Most all of us have known the pain of a bad relationship. Yet we 'fear' the pain of loneliness far more - even though we KNOW the pain of loneliness will be less than the pain of the bad relationship. It's fear of the unknown that keeps us from moving. Pain can be a constant - fear is the immobilizer that keeps you in pain.

To oversimplify, Pain (negative stimulus) and Reward (positive stimulus) are the two greatest motivators. Reward is the greater of the two, but only to those who are not in serious pain. Those who learn to cope with chronic pain have been motivated by pain.

Possible, I would think pleasure was a better one?

I second that. There's no better motivator.

Fear of loss is the greatest motivator of all.

Love; I think love is the biggest motivator.

Most women decide to become pregnant knowing it will probably be a very painfull birth. Then most women become pregnant a second time because of wanting to love a second child.

I don't think pain is the motivator is this case.
