No kidding. The bailout is bad, but this new bailout bill is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard out of the senate. It didn't pass the house, so they add in 150 Billion in earmarks. Wow...
It's only "pork barrel" if someone ELSE is getting the benefit. There was a ton of other stuff added to this so all the Congressional Representatives who are facing tough re-election fights can go home and appear on TV and say to their constituency "look what I got for us!" in the hopes that it will get them re-elected.
Incidentally, the majority of those projects were added to make Republicans happy no MATTER what the Republican party ministers said on TV. The reason is exactly what I stated. The president wanted the bail out. The people did not. Congressional members who were worried about keeping their seats (mostly Republican) hung on for the extra bucks. Now they can go home and say "well, yeah ... but LOOK!" in the hopes the voters will forget about the bailout money we've just been obligated to for the balance of our lifetime as a nation.

You can spin this how you want if it makes you feel better. Obviously they put in more Pork to please the republicans, more republicans voted no.
The failure of this initial bill was bi partisan, and in my opinion one of the better decisions made in the house in the past several years. If you wish to pin that on the Republicans, than you can, but it just makes them look better.
You're right. But what happened? You witnessed a grave amount of propaganda manipulation by the Republicans. The Republicans voted the bill down. The Republicans announced the Democrats were responsible for the loss. The people were happy because they wanted the bill killed. The Republicans porked it up - for BOTH sides. Then the Republicans announced they had to pork it up for the Dems to pass it.
So, first they miscalculated how against it their party constituents were, and blamed the Dems. Oops. When they realized their error, the only manipulation they could come up with from there was "blame the Dems - we had to add pork for them." Neither statement was true. The pork was added for BOTH sides - mostly Republicans to win their votes. So the CHEAPER bail out was passed by Dems, rejected by Republicans. The more expensive, porked up version was passed by a majority of Republicans.
I realize you were against the bail out (I was to - I was for going after the bastards with everything), but which side went for the cheap version, which one went with the expensive one - and WHO lied their ass off about every twist and turn? The propaganda machine.
Woah there Silly. I don't think you can make a statement saying the Republicans porked it up without some sort of back up. The Dems control the house, if a bill does not pass in the house, the dems get some blame. That's how it works in a majority rules situation.
Plenty of Dems changed their vote on the new one as well.
Majority of Dems voted for it. Republicans threw it into the nay column. Read Hauli's comment below. It'll take some time to look at the pork - but I will make a bet more of it landed for industries located in Republican districts. It's the way the vote landed that tells me so.
Here's the specific pork projects I could find that seemed to be fair. They've listed the senators and representatives who's pet projects the individual pork was where they could.
Both parties failed America during this vote, and that is all that really matters.
I can't convince you not to blame the republicans for failing, or passing, this bill. Somehow you will still find fault with them. Though the fault should be shared.
No - you misunderstand me. Both sides failed us - yes. I was pointing out the PROPAGANDA and BALD FACE LYING being done by the Republicans during the entire matter. THAT is my issue with them. They lie, they spin, they BS. Republicans blamed DEMOCRATS - Pelosi in particular - for the bill first failing - NOT TRUE. BALD FACED LIE. Majority of R's voted against it, majority of D's voted FOR it, including Pelosi. They reacted and lied BEFORE they realized how set the public was against it. The public reaction (sensed by the R's who are facing tough re-election bids) is what made the R's vote Nay. Once the R leaders realized their mistake - they porked it up - to gather the R votes they needed for passage. Yes, pork for D's too. THEN R leaders chant "Dems allowed passage AFTER THEY porked it up for THEMSELVES." Again - NOT TRUE. Tons of Republican pork was added for those R's facing tough re-election bids.
I have a problem with the bald faced lies that pour out of them. They are tremendous - and NOBODY but NOBODY calls them on it! Even YOU, after giving the link that showed the DEMS voted majority for passage, claimed the Dems were responsible for the failure! Then you blamed the passage on the DEMS desire for pork when the majority of pork was added by and for the R's! What's up? Didn't you read your own links? I did! It was right there for everyone to see. And you fell into line with the R's chants. I don't understand it.
Edited to add: Look, I'm like you. Slightly left of center. Been a registered R most of my adult life - fiscal conservative, business owner. But social liberal - keep the government the hell out of my private life. Now the R's are spending like crazy and passing laws against my privacy. Swung me HARD D these last couple of administrations. I no longer trust the Rs at all - these types of proud, bald-faces lies are WHY I've gone that way.

At least they supported bailing out the important stuff like Nascar, wooden arrow makers and Puerto Rican Rum. I was really worried they would miss these needy charities.

You should be happy. If I recall correctly there is an earmark in there for Wool research.
LMAO!!!!
You must be new to this game.

If all the Dems (only) get behind something it passes.
If all the Repubs (only) get behind something it fails.
You can try and blame the republicans all you want, but it's just not valid.

I don't trust any of them. And there were more than enough lies to go around during this "debate" of the Rescue package.
At least they supported bailing out the important stuff like Nascar, wooden arrow makers and Puerto Rican Rum. I was really worried they would miss these needy charities.
Was there anything in there about the wool industry?
Yes there was. Sorry, I got stuck on the pork and forgot about the lamb.
