I am against this for the some of the same reasons I was against the added tax on cigarettes.
If I am reading the articles right, they are proposing adding the tax on top of the standard sales tax, which in NY is placed not on foods for human consumption, but on snacks, confections, prepared meals and soft drinks. I think the total tax will be about 15%.
It should be noted that the proposal package also included luxury taxes for high ticket items such as furs and boats, as well as a waving of the current exemption on clothing items priced under $115. They are trying to close a $15 billion dollar budget deficit.
Depends. Do you want to privatize all education, transportation, police, fire, emergency room services, healthcare, highways, etc? That would solve a great deal of the problem, but you will be transferring the costs to private ownership who may very well charge more than what you are saving.
It should be noted that when the cigarette tax went into effect here, it was with the intention of defraying the cost of medical services to people with health problems due to cigarette smoking. Some of the same thinking is going on here...pack a day soda drinkers take in an enormous number of calories from their habit, which of course leads to obesity. Every grossly obese person, and many of the diabetics I have met, tend to take in most of their calories from soda. There is even some speculation that the high fructose corn syrup in soda may be responsible for the jump in the rate of diabetes.
One of my hates is 'social engineering'. Whether people get fat or not is up to them, not some dictatorial government.
unfortunately the state of New York does not feel the same way.Their actually serious about doing this.
An idiot tax, maybe. Tax BEER more.

Doesn't the government have a better solution to any problem in the world than to tax stuff?
