Just read his bio on wikipedia, looks impressive and it should make republicans happy as well as his role model was a republican . Personally I like the bit on civil rights, something that needs a lot of work.
It doesn't bother you that he has absolutely no experience in the Intelligence field and that his counterparts world-wide are probably busting their guts on this one. In the world of espionage his civil rights experience will net him nothing but dead CIA agents.
Remember when President Bush tried to appoint Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court and she did not have the appropriate experience? Everyone went crazy and it didn't happen. Or rememember the press about Brownie of the infamous Katrina inexperience? I think that was called cronyism. A CIA director with no experience is a really bad step for Obama.

Bothered me a bit, until someone pointed out that Bush Sr. had also come to the agency as an outsider, and did a commendable job.
My boss (who is a Republican) had been a little offput by it too, but suspects that they are trying to break up and old-boys club and get more accountability, which could be a good thing. I guess time will tell.
Personally, I like that he is strong on civil rights and if there is one major area where you guys need to be seen to clean up your act then it is the CIA, for instance for the "faulty" information on Iraq's WOMD debacle and the torture. Judging by his age, I guess that he will just clean up shop and then some one else will take over. I know it will not please the warmongers in either party, but to me he seems to be a good choice for those who want clean up foreign politics.

But with a name like that, surely he must be a mafioso? I can't think of any other reason it would be unwise, anyway.
And at least two people voted you down for that?
They either did not appreciate my sense of humour, or they really don't like Mr. Panetta :).

Your point is well taken. But one would hope that he would work with and value the people who have the experience that compliments his.

I think you will find that it has been the CIA that has contributed greatly to the fact that we have not been attacked since 9-11.
