There is a far greater difference between right-wing GOP and centrist GOP than between left-wing Dems and centrist Dems so the Republicans are due a divide.

I think a good portion of the GOP base up till now has been decent, hardworking people that love God and country and have probably become increasingly nervous by the party's continued embrace of whack-jobs to shore up it's "base". Once any party does that, its time has come.

And it may not be such a bad thing, really. The two-party system doesn't give us any real choices and does not serve us well. Let whack jobs form their own parties. The GOP should return to it's original form, as should the Dems. And maybe some of the smaller parties can start growing and coming forward.

Is 'very likely' the same thing as 'dear gawd I hope so!"?

I think it's pretty obvious. If you go back and replay Hannity and Rush from the beginning of the year they hated McCain. They're forced to carry water for him now... but you can tell that their hearts' just aren't in it.
