It appears, based on another question on here, that one US political party has an Ass as its symbol. Odd choice?

The donkey or jackass is not the official symbol, but is the most recognized. It also was not originally chosen by the democratic party. During Andrew Jackson's (I think) run for the presidency his opponent referred to him as a jackass and political cartoonist ran with it and started drawing him riding a donkey. Rather than trying to fight the image it was embarrassed for its positive qualities.

I believe the symbol for the Democratic party speaks for itself. They couldn't have picked a more appropriate symbol.
I disagree, it's an odd choice.
Sure it was them that picked it?
well they do use it....
If you were to be on a rough journey down a rugged mountain path, or up, would you want a stead footed ass or a cumbersome elephant.
I guess it depends if you want to be like Hannibal (the Carthaginian military commander that is)
Yup. It seems a stubborn, strong, productive animal. Sounds good to me.
Strong and productive I like, but do you nesicarily want stubborn?

Many Democrats bear a striking resemblance to their symbol, especially the women.
What animal did Jesus mother ride to the inn on?

I thought that is the reason.
If that is the reason, I think it is a Excellent choice.
