Before the Norman Conquest, the leader of Wales was usually titled "King of the Britons'. After the conquest, the title evolved into Prince of Wales, although not many holders were recognized by the English.
Wales has its own Assembly with, it must be said, limited powers. Those powers not held by the assembly devolve onto the central government of the United Kingdom.
Wales is a beautiful country - geographically it looks quite a bit like the area of the US where I grew up. But the language is a mystery. You can cough and sneeze in a pub - then discover you've begun a conversation.

The spread of country data tells the story alone. What does concern me is the 2 people in the UK who think Wales is part of England. If they're imagrants they really should have known that for their citizenship test.
No, it is part of the United Kingdom, but a sovereign nation in its own right.
