Scientology became a "religion" purely for the tax advantages. It "cloaked" itself as a religion. Then it obtained its IRS tax exemption through filing 2500 lawsuits against the IRS, including personal lawsuits against IRS personnel; and blackmailing certain key IRS personnel. Plenty of documentation on this. Check out youfoundthecard.com and whyweprotest.net
Fortunately, all this will soon be history, and Scientology's top leaders will be in prison. Lots of stuff in the works! Won't be much longer!
Only to people who piss them off. From various Hubbard Communications Office Policy Letters:
«If attacked on some vulnerable point by anyone or anything or any organization, always find or manufacture enough threat against them to cause them to sue for peace.»
— L. Ron Hubbard, HCOPL 15 August 1960, Dept. of Govt. Affairs
«A truly Suppressive Person or group has no rights of any kind and actions taken against them are not punishable.»
— L. Ron Hubbard, HCOPL of 1 March 1965, "Ethics, Suppressive Acts, Suppression of Scientology and Scientologists"
«ENEMY SP Order. Fair game. May be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.»
— L. Ron Hubbard, HCOPL 18 October 1967
These demonstrate two of the defining traits of a cult:
1. The leader assumes the position of the godhead.
2. A different standard of ethics applies to outsiders.
It is an evil con and seeks to entrap suckers in order enslave them and steal their money, all to enrich a few unscrupulous leaders who know better than to believe their own garbage.

Religious Bigotry rears it's ugly head again.
