People do it all the time. they go to church just to impress the neighbors and don't actually listen to what the preacher says. And yes as large as Obama's church is I would think it would be pretty easy to not pay attention.

On what do you base that opinion?

I agree with that statement and that is based on experience and observation. This is especially true if you have small children that are monopolizing your focus as you try to make them behave and be quiet and not disruptive.

Welcome back, crazy. You're comments have been missed...

I think people generally accept what they are told without question, as part of their culture, unless they live in a culture that makes the asking of questions paramount in importance.

Obama knew.

Once again that master mentalist, the clairvoyant MikeHend amazes us all with his knowledge of exactly what was going on in someone else's head.

And once again our old leftist buddy plawler talks out of his butt.

Wow! Thanks for the reasoned response Mike. I really appreciate your erudite and well thought out responses. Of course I am actually not a "leftist" but then you're clairvoyant, and you know what's in my mind, so you already know that.

For the publicity. Wright is a publicity seeker.

Going to a building called a Church for 20 plus years doesn't make you a Christian, anymore than going to Mcdonalds for 20 years makes you a Big-Mac. The object of going to Church is not to get you in the Church, it's to get the Church inside of you. Jesus said, and know you shall KNOW the truth, and the truth shall set you free. Not, and now People will build buildings, call them Churches, and by going to the buildings, you will be set free. Its a lifestyle, Repentance and faith. Salvation through Grace along through faith, it is a gift of God not by works, EPH 2:8-9 . Check out www.wayofthemaster.com and listen to the message called True and False Conversion, its a straight forward message on this topic.

God Bless!

The object of the Church is to pass the collection plate.

First of all Rev Wright is not "the church" - he is a person - and second of all - yes, I have sat in many churches and didn't believe every tid bit that was said. I have attended a black church for years and liberation theology is typically and openly discussed. In all the churches I have been in - I have NEVER heard anything as ridiculous as what Hagee said about Katrina being a punishment for gays.

Duh. I just got what this question was asking. Well, to be fair, one of our members recently pointed out:

"Gee, I've belonged to several churches in my 70 years and none tried to brainwash me and I was free to make my own opinions and to accept/reject what was said from the pulpit."

Probably there are alot of parishioners, white, black and yellow, who do this. So why is everyone up in arms over Wright? Are we to hold Obama to different standards than our own?

I was the 70 year older and I will add that if I had heard any of Wright's comments coming out of the mouth of my pastor, I would durn sure let that pastor know and then immediately move my membership to another church. Even if you don't listen to every word you cannot but help absorb the tone and tenor of the sermons. I criticize Obama a lot, but I never labeled him as stupid.

Isn't the church elders the ones who choose who will lead them. You cant go to church and get anything out of it if you dont pay attention. I pity the people dont belong and will never understand.

I pity the people who do and will never understand.

I pity the people that just don't know.

This question is poorly phrased -- it should read, "Is it possible to sit in a church for 20 years and NOT know what's in the mind of your pastor?" If you're an intelligent person, you wouldn't be in a church if you didn't know what it was teaching. The words of your pastor, however, can quite often step away from what the church's teachings are. Obviously, Wright is an example of just that. He is an embarrassment to the congregation and, if I'm not mistaken, the current reverend at that parish is not real happy about it. I could be wrong but I certainly wouldn't be surprised!

The question, the way it is phrased, is misleading and manipulative.
