Why does everyone condemn a parent for telling children "Do as I say, not as I do" but not a country?

because Children can be corrected and properly disciplined, they Have to listen or their is consequences. Crazy mad men can not be disciplined by other countries, just have sanctions put on them, that's like a slap on the wrist. They continue to do what they "believe" is the right thing, even though it is wrong, and usually brings war of some sort, that's generally blamed on the President of the Free world as unjust. irony at its greatest.

but isn't that all opinion? Bush was a crazy mad man and no one took away his nukes.

One of the problems with nukes is you cannot take them away.

..

Ethics don't change because of the number of people involved.

And you have authority over your own child, but not over mine, In the same way, Israel, or the US, or Mexico have no authority over Iran.

I would have though someone who lived in a country where their election was stolen by an American voting machine company would understand that.

Ethics may not change in different situations but the ethical response to those different situations might.

..

I thought you right-wingers were the ones that thought situational ethics were anathema.

So my having a difference of opinion with you makes me a right-winger?

I'm pretty left of center, and by that I do not mean left of American center which is often still right or centrist in global terms.

I'm used to random proclamations of others beliefs by the radical right on here, glad to see both sides love to paste labels on anyone who dare disagree.

For what it's worth, perhaps nothing, ethics do not need to change for an ethical decision to change. A change of situation can cause that. Which is exactly what I said above.

EXAMPLE: Killing is wrong. Protecting life is good. All fine and dandy. Would it really have been wrong to kill Hitler or Pol Pot or Slobodan Milosevic or any other of the many genocidal maniacs if killing either one would have stopped the massacres? Of course this could be torn apart by saying that they were not innocent nor living by that code themselves and so were outside the law.

Okay, take the abortion example. Or take the example of someone stealing to feed their family during Katrina, and so on.

Ethics are great and should be studied and understood and lived by when appropriate. But they shouldn't be blindly followed when situation dictates otherwise.

..

One country's leaders have expressed their desire to destroy the other on many occassions. The other has really only asked to be left alone (although it HAS been a bit aggressive about it).

If one must be chosen, which would you rather see with nukes?

They have also stated that they will nuke everyone else before they fall.

Do you have a source on that?

Of course it's hypocritical. It's also the best situation for the United States.

its hypocritical to say that NO countries can have nukes when the US has so many

its not No countries, just the nutters.

but they think we're nuts (and all agree Bush was a nut) and say they're nuts - it's all opinion from whatever vantage point your standing at.

Simply because Iran is an unstable countries rules by loonies that make Kim Jong Il look sane, and that is quite an achievement.

but isn't that a matter of opinion?

Yes, but since everything is subjective, do you just throw up your hands? No, you make decisions. In the case of nuclear weapons it is often a good idea to keep them from proliferating.

It may not be "fair" for Israel to have them and no one else in the immediate region, but as they already have them, should all of Israel's neighbors get them? And then all of Israel's neighbors' neighbors? Considering how close the U.S. and U.S.S.R. have come to nuclear war in the past, I'd hate to think of every bilateral dispute having potentially nuclear repercussions, and not only involving the two disagreeing countries, but all of their neighbors and neighbors' neighbors and allies of everyone as well.

..

Well it is very hypocritical but it would be smart to keep it out of the Iranian's hands. This is all our falt (like most things). We did destroy a democratic government and replaced with a dictatorship. We are running with the torch of imperialism and doing it quite well. We will hand it to China and then go straight to Armageddon. Have a nice day!(C:
