It depends on how old the kid is and whether or not his/her parents let the kid watch "Ghost Whisperer." If they did then all you have to do is tell the kid they "crossed over."

"You would love to hear what others have to say, especially those who have no religious beliefs".
"Do you say their bodies become worm fodder."
I could never describe a deceased person as fodder and I doubt that you are interested in other views.
You were Baptised a Catholic, educated in Catholic schools, qualified in a Catholic Uni. and expect teach in a Catholic school and probably have Baptised your children Catholic and they go to Catholic school, I presume.

I'm non-religious, but i don't have kids however, If the kid was slightly older i would tell them the deceased had returned to where they were before they were born - and we do not know for sure where that is - all we do know for sure is that they are still a part of this great and beautiful mother earth and their life was the earth expressing itself in an amazing way over the course of their life, and that is to be celebrated over, not sad.
Nope. They don't HAVE a destination to explain. And kids from five on are pretty much able to understand "This is what I believe. Other people believe other things. The Ghost Whisperer is a con man."
So do you feel the same way about the fiction books you read and the movies you watch--I dont see the tv show mentioned trying to sell anything?? It is what it is, just as mickey mouse is.
I rather like a show called "The mentalist." He says "There is no such thing a psychics. I was one, and it was faked."
Books, unfortunately, do not carry the authority TV does, nor do they have the ability to program thinking that the tube does. A GOOD show on the subject would bust the cons, not pretend they are real.
You (ans I) are both capable of analyzing political statements, too. Do you think that describes most people who watch TV?
I am non-religious, but if I get asked this question by a kid, I am pretty sure it would be a grandchild. I just tell them I don't know and to ask their mom, she can say whatever she wants, the heaven thing more than likely, just to make them feel better.

After they're dead they're just meat.
'Just kidding. (I was trying to see it from a worm's point of view.) ;)

I think you have the wrong show in mind---http://www.cbs.com/primetime/ghost_whisperer/
Ghosts don't exist. If you talk to them, you are conning people. No matter what some fantasy show says.

It's allways difficult! ;)
As an uncle, it's my right and obligation to be subversive. But Felix's answer was very nice and would suffice.
