How about bombing abortion clinics? Invading sovereign countries that have done NOTHING to us because you don't like their religion and leader? Did you forget that Hitler was Christian? And Mussolini?
And I aced my college Bible classes at a Southern Baptist College.

I guess you can call it the truth if you are willing to redefine promoting violence as anything that treats violence as a fact of human life and comfort as the highest good. Of course you have to take everything out of historical and cultural context and you have to read everything assuming no figures of speech were ever used. But you do whatever floats your boat. I don't think it's very wise, but I guess you do.
That does not make Islam worse then say Christianity. The bible advocates to kill women who are not virgins on their wedding night as well.
"But if this charge is true (that she wasn't a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father's house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst." (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)
I belie that Deuteronomy is part of the Torah. That’s the Jews holy book.
You’re quoting from what Christians call old law. Christians fallow the new-testament and use the old testament as a historical reference for how the new dispensation can about.
Can anyone make a case using new-testament scripture to show how Christianity is a violent religion?
Yes the old testament is in the Bible but it is not the teachings of Christ. The reason its in the Bible is to show how the coming of Christ was predicted. A Christian is a follower of Christ and all of his teachings are in the New Testament. So you may see it as a cafeteria option but your obviously not well studied on this matter.
If you can show me where Christ taught violence I would like to see that.
The problem with you anti-religious types is that you base all of you opinions on the acts of extremist and don't look at the actual teachings and form a well educated opinion.
Show you where Christ taught violence? Does "believe in what I say or I will throw you in a pit in fire to burn for all eternity" count?
If not... then I have plenty of ammo left. Example number 997 (I just picked that one randomly) of violence in the bible according to http://skepticsannotatedbible.com/ is from Matthew 25:30; "And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
The servant who kept and returned his master's talent (without making any profit) was cast into the "outer darkness" where there will be "weeping and gnashing of teeth." Interesting!
Re: Does "believe in what I say or I will throw you in a pit in fire to burn for all eternity" count?
Nope. Because he didn't say that. You may be referring to where it was explained how your soul may join him after death. If you don't want that, (and why would you if you don't believe he is God.) then your soul will be disposed of and you will be dead forever. The disposal referred to Gehenna, the constantly burning garbage dump outside of Jerusalem.
Your soul will. (which shouldn't be a problem if you don't believe in souls.) Your body and mind will still be dead like mine.
Gehenna is a metaphor for Hell. In fact, it is translated as "hell" in most English translations of the Bible. Since people believe in all kinds of Hells, it reminds me that Christians don't believe in transmigration of souls and that decisions and actions here on Earth have eternal consequences. It also reminds me that Hell is primarily a place for disposal, not punishment.
And Re: Example number 997 ... of violence in the bible ... is from Matthew 25:30;
Wrong again. That's part of a parable. (a fictional story told to make a point) The point of the parable is that God blesses his followers so they can be a blessing.
This employee was given something of value to hold for the boss. He not only hoarded it. but put it where it wouldn't do anybody any good. He had no value in the eyes of his employer, so he was fired. Christians that accept the blessings of God are commanded to be productive, not just sit around feeling smug.

Although that is the natural outcome if you do what he asks, he was really addressing one of the problems organized religion has; people that are so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good.
Many people believe that sitting around mumbling prayers is the most holy thing you can do. He was teaching that, by Gods standard, they would be fired.
I am sorry that you have only met fake Christians. With all of the people that go to church you will find that only part of them are true Christians. If you want to look for hypocrisy you will find it. To lump all Christians with thous fakes is not the sign that you take a educated approach to you bigotry.

That would be the same for you. Your making the assumption that all Christians are hypocrites. until you have met all of us then you are making incorrect assumptions.

A-Dick- Do you think you're the first to level this charge against Christians? Think again. We're going to start numbering these answers to save time. Standard answer #3: When Muslims kill unbelievers for not submitting, they are following the teachings of Mohammed and their Qu'ran. When Christians kill unbelievers or those of others faiths, they are NOT following the teachings of Jesus and the New Testament. Also, the total number of those killed by the Christians you've referenced are but a FRACTION of those killed by totalitarian atheists like Stalin, Hitler (no, he was not a Christian), Mao and Pol Pot. These atheists acted out of selfishness and a desire to see the fittest survive (their own group) over the "weaker" groups (Christians, Jews, blacks, gypsies, etc.).

Did you read them in the original Arabic, or in English translations? You know, like translating 'well-poisoner' as 'witch' and 'young woman' as 'virgin' as was done with Christian holy books? Do you think English translations of the Qur'an are any better?
I don't believe the intent of any religion is to spread violence.
However, all religions have had members who justify violence in the name of their religion. Ultimately it is people who commit violence.
No more so than Christianity.

When was the last time you heard of an honor killing by a Christian or a none-Christian being killed for not converting to Christianity?
Yes there are Christians that have use violence to push there agendas. But where in the New-Testament do you read that is ok?
You can find it in the Koran but not in the New-Testament.
Have you read both books? I have and I can tell you there are two very different undertones.

Well that's certainly the most twisted analysis I've seen in a while.
Truth hurts doesn't it?

You are the one worshipping a god that killed two million people not me.

I'm sorry I thought the question was ref-furring to religions and what they taught. Not about the extremist in a religion.
A lot has been done in the name of religion but that does not necessarily mean it was done in accordance with the teachings in there teachings.

What do you mean "be productive"? Does he want you to increase the rate at which goods or services are produced especially output per unit of labor?

At least the people mumbling prayers in private aren't as annoying.
They are to God. That was the point.

I agree that Hitler was not an Atheist. Some argue that he was a Christian. He wasn't.

Sorry. I should have said heathens. It's sometimes hard to follow my own conversation because the Liberal thought Nazis have been at it again.

There are violent people in the religion, but the same can be said of most religions.

Yes, as practiced by Shiites.

[1 point] 2 years ago by deleted user ReplyNo they haven't. Do the math. Most people died in someone's quest for power or land. Religion was used for justification.
The Muslim jihads and Christian crusades are exceptions to the general rule and killed fewer people than any other reason.

[1 point] 2 years ago by deleted user ReplyIn the first place, the Bible says Love of money is the root of evil, not money itself. Money is just a tool.
Second, More people have died in someone's quest for power or land than for any other reason.

The actual quoat your talking about is out of the Bible and its not "Money is the root of all evil" it is "The LOVE of Money is the root of all evil"
