Because the religious are making laws against it.

So much for separation of church and state.

Practically all of the contentious issues in this country are a matter of the religious trying to impose their religious law as the law of the land.

The only one I can think of that isn't religious in nature (but is often buttressed by fanaticism) is the race issue.

Because in a theocracy, the religious law supersedes secular law.

???, the ten commandments are gone from the courthouse.

Okay, then, what logical reason is there for denying gays equal marriage rights?

Much of our law was based on biblical law. Until they remove laws that are clearly based on religious preference rather than civil rights, we have a theocracy.

I don't know what the reason is, some legal stuff, but I just pointed out that we are not a total theocracy, It means "by the rule of God" and although we are influenced by theological or moral concepts, we do have a president instead of a religious leader such as a Pope. The religious law does not always supersede the secular law, as with separation of church and state.

The ten commandments may, be, but you still swear on the Bible in court.

and the folks who are opposed to gay marriage are overwhelmingly right wing Christians who want their narrow-minded, intolerant, and cruel God's law to be the law of the land. They even say so. Loudly. Often.

the comment was sardonic in nature, referring to the fact that those who oppose gay marriage generally support the idea of a theocracy.

And you still SAY that you take this person for better or worse, till death do you part----that too is not true or punishable??

I am not sure at all that all that oppose gay marriage are doing it for a religious reason. As well as I am not sure that all religious people are against it, so I am not with this overwhelming theocracy thingy.

It was sardonicism, a ruse designed to make one look at the results and roots of opposition. IF it didn't work, it didn't work.

I think there is another whole class of opposition that is hiding behind the religious opposition. I don't think business OR government is at all interested in the expenses of spousal benefits. Yet another great reason to deny people human rights.

Would it be possible to have an atheist for president in the USA? I guess not. I think it is a sad fact that there is no real freedom for those who are not christians in the USA or those who do not wish to live by the moral standards of many christians.

Well, I do remember my dad telling me that Kennedy didn't have a chance cause he was a Catholic, I think an atheist would have a chance these days??

Nope. Polls show that they are less trusted than Muslims.
