It would depend on the setting. I would not feel very confident in a roomful of people attempting to get permission to attend an execution, for example. Nor would I feel terribly confident in a room full of cops or business suits or the Republican national Convention. Just as a few examples.
Yes it is hard to get enough detail into the question. I assumed that people would take a 'general feel' approach rather than picking out situations at the ends of the spectrum.
So to further define, its a room full of people who are already talking general tame chit-chat. They are of mixed backgrounds and fairly normal. And you are sober.
I love getting to know new people and I mix well with people from very different backgrounds, so this would probably not be difficult for me, probably something I could even enjoy.

Okay. I would be sober anyway. Tame chit-chat bores me hollow. I would be looking for other people who are equally bored by meaningless inanities.
Tame chit-chat while sober. Not my strong suit.
Never been a problem. Partly because I have had a reat deal of practise.
