It's like asking someone to say goodbye to Mom, Dad, Sis, Bro, their wife, their son, their daughter, their son-in-law, their grandson, and their granddaughter, or a thousand people in Darfur who didn't have half a chance anyway. Not very hard to decide this one.

Okay, here is another silly false dilemma for you:
The malevolent factor gives you another illogical choice. He says you will learn of the demise of ten of your most beloved friends and relatives over the course of the next week -UNLESS- you tell me where to to allow the next 10,000 victim earthquake to take place. All I can tell you, says the malevolent factor is this, with or without your input I am going to cause an earthquake somewhere that will claim 10,000 victims, but if you don't tell me where to do it I will take your ten loved ones as well, but if you tell me where to do it, the same number will die, but your ten loved ones will be spared. What would you do then? Don't say "you tell me," just answer it, or say I cannot or I will not.

What if you were asked to pick the spot where it could do the greatest good?
If you just picked a spot where the most ignorant uneducated people lived, it is obvious that is not the place where it could do the greatest good. If you picked a place where the most intelligent economically-successful people lived, that is probably where it could do the greatest good. It would motivate the most technologically advanced to work full steam ahead to come up with improved seismographic detection methods, develop yet more eathquake resistant building materials, impress upon people the need to avoid building on earthquake fault zones, etc. This would save future lives of the economically-successful, and the technology would filter down to help everyone in the future. Ultimately millions of lives could be saved over the course of the next 500 years.

I would choose 1000 people I don't know. But I wanna choose who it will be. Well you can't because you don't know them. But, I would choose the people who will die within a week anyway.
I choose my mum, dad, bro, gran, grad, Ricky, Ricky's girlfriend, Luke, Lydia, and of course Luke's friend. That was though, there was so many I wanted to get rid of.
well i know more than 1000 people die everyday anyways....

and "i know" as in i know that more than 1000 people die everday...
That is not what he said.

I could probably pick 10 people that I wouldn't miss much. It doesn't say you have to like them. :-)
But do you get to pick? I think that is the crux of the question... how are the 10 chosen?
I don't like my friends that much to begin with
Am I allowed to pick ten people I know but don't like? If so, ten people, of course! I could find ten on Myspace in less than ten minutes.
I am amazed that Bob_us has not commented on what a bad question this is :)

I like the "hand picking" idea. I know some real scum that could go away.

How about only one person you don't even know... for 1 million dollars?

What if you had to be the one to do it?
