tI is not possible for that to happen-totally unconstitutional. You can't shut down a network that has a different point of view. Besides being illegal, it would be very petty and beneath the Office of the President.
They should take Bush's example and just bomb their offices instead.
But I agree, they should not be shut down, as far as I know there is no law that prevents news agencies from knowingly spreading lies. Nor should any politician be allowed to shut down person or agency on a whim. Even if those agencies are lying...
Actually, there are Federal laws regulating how and when you can audit to prevent harassment. And with the Telecommunications Act the airwaves are no longer a public trust, so that weapon is gone as well. Prior to the Telecommunications ACt, Fox would not have been able to get away with calling what they do news, and so clearly acted against the public interest that they might have lost their license.

I *never* watch FOXNEWS. I do watch Keith Olbermann on MSNBC regularly and he is always pointing out lies told on FOXNEWS. I can't remember them all. Next time he points something out I'll make a point to remember it so I can tell you about it.
So these lies are so numerous, so outlandish and so offensive that you have banned them from your memory?
I guess what I am getting at is that these "lies" may be in fact a persons opinion or a persons belief. There are people who believe that the government was involved with blowing up the World Trade Center. Now if they get on TV and say that are they lying or are they expressing an opinion? I have seen programs on the History Channel that talk about Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, UFOs and ghosts. Is the History Channel "lying" or do they have programming expressing other peoples opinions and beliefs?
Again, let me say that I do not watch FOX news, but I do watch my share of TV and I do have a low opinion of people who only want their point of view to be presented as fact and want to label all others as liars. There is a difference in being wrong and being a liar.
- An obviously truthful and enlightening source of the "REAL" news with headlines that say "NEW PROOF 9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB!" and "Free Energy - Pentagon Conspiracy to Cover up". Is that what FOX is lying about?? Humm.
- here is an interesting article that may be what you all are worked up over. Its an article about Glen Beck making a semi-factual statement but getting his locations mixed up. He must have also told a lie about an Obama associate being mixed up in the ACORN scandal. Well Glen Beck being wrong about something doesn't make FOX news a lying new source. It just makes Glen Beck wrong.
- Now the liberals are claiming that the major networks are conservative biased. They better look out, once FOX gets the shaft, they may be next on the hit list.
That was his point. Kieth Olbermann counts up disagreements and counts them as lies. It's a BS argument.
There is no serious discussion possible because people refuse to recognize the difference between a wrong opinion and a lie. People refuse to recognize the difference between a minor factual error and a bald faced lie. People refuse to recognize the difference between being confusing and a lie. People refuse to recognize the difference between statements taken in context and out of context. People even refuse to recognize the difference between what people say and what is said about them.
This can not be seriously discussed until people start communicating, instead of simply using words as weapons.

Im sure they are no more selective than the results you would have provided. That is IF you would have provided any. I'm glad to see you so clearly showing that your not seriously interested in discussing this so people don't waste their time responding to YOUR bullshit replies about....well nothing....
O like MSNBC only reports the truth. If FOX news was the worst of all of the network news channels and told nothing but lies. Why are they one of the top rated news channels? Wouldn't every one have figured that out by now? Or are trying to tell us that only thous that don't disagree with the White House are telling the truth? Every TV network and every TV anchor has an agenda. If only one channel is saying something different lets shut them down by all means. We don't need to have an opposing side that does not have a crush on the Mr.P
Where in the constitution does it say that you can't shut down a organisation that goes on the Television and spreads lies to everyone and say it's news?
Nope. Not true. The COnstitutionality of such actions has never been decided upon.
The actual two bases for allowing Fox to lie and call it news, and to allow all news to accept unresearched press releases as news, lies in the two events described below.
I don't deliberate misinformation by national news media is protected by the first amendment. I know there's limits to what sort of lies you're allowed to publish about people, at least.
The first amendment isn't the only document that regulates freedom of speech. Consider the "right" to tell military secrets during war. Or whether you can print an article falsely accusing your neighbour of child molestation. You would get arrested or sued, and very likely get convicted.
It doesn't say it in the Constitution. The first blow in favor of news without any news content was actually struck by a game show. When it became public knowledge that The $64,000 Question was fixing its shows, it resulted in Congressional hearings. Congress decided that since TV was just entertainment, it had no requirement to be honest.
The rest of what little control there was over whether or not news was actually news was gutted by the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which essentially took the airwaves away from the public and gave them to media corporations.

People on the Left couldn't tell the difference between an opinion show and a news show if it bit them. Remember, some of them still claim a Conservative news bias in mainstream media.
You shouldn't expect Liberals to know the difference.

Then you are practically alone compared to what is heard in the mainstream media. Most Liberals scream about Hannity or O'Reilly or Beck and conveniently ignore the different views brought to the hard news programs.
My view is that Fox news is basically pro-conservative the same way that CNN is basically pro-liberal. Neither lies, so much as they come at stories from different directions. When moderate Republicans and independents hear people screaming Lies, Lies, Lies, about Fox, then hear Congressman Grayson spouting hate speech, we tend to dismiss the agitators as nutjobs with an agenda.
That's my experience translate. I realize you don't care about anybody else, but I never claimed it as fact, just my experience.
You are right. I never answered your question about a specific piece. I assume it supported your point or you wouldn't have mentioned it. I instead answered that I had a different opinion based on my observations.
You're the one that said you wanted to discuss it. I guess that means you only want to discuss it with people that agree.

Part of what we are fighting here is a culture war starting with the Hippies in 1968. The Boomers have been running things for nearly a generation now and have made things better in some ways and worse in others, but we are still changing the social constructs in the US. It's a messy process, and may be necessary in a country where the people still believe that WE are the government, that what our government does is what we asked for.

I agree with all but your conclusion sentence. The "war" isn't over because the Liberals and their allies the Socialists decisively won the last major battle.
Socialists won? where? in the U.S.? They are all right of centre over there, you guys have shifted so far to the right (and dictatorial) that even the pope looks like a raging communist.

Shutting them down would probably be unconstitutional but auditing their tax return every year would not be.
I bet if they tell as many lies on their tax return as they tell on the air they might find a way to put them out of business legally. :-)
Ah, yes, Capone them.

Let me preface my question by first saying I very rarely watch Fox news.....so which lies are you speaking of exactly?
I *never* watch FOXNEWS. I do watch Keith Olbermann on MSNBC regularly and he is always pointing out lies told on FOXNEWS. I can't remember them all. Next time he points something out I'll make a point to remember it so I can tell you about it.

Switch Off and they start to loose advertising dollars.
Or flood them with emails, phone calls, Registered letters with legitimate complaints (no dangerous threats) and they will start to listen.
No I don't think it will be shut down, but Rupert Murdoch sells any of his businesses that don't make enough money.
