This is one of the reasons history is so important. Remember past mistakes, and try not to make them again. Problem is human failure and ego. The successive generations fail to draw parallels between past and current events, or are too busy thinking they'll be able to somehow control the same situations with identical solutions and somehow achieve different results.
I think it was Einstein who said "insanity is performing the same experiment over and over and expecting a different result." I THINK it was Einstein, but the reflection on the human thought process is a good one.
Actually, no. The quote is "Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results." and it was said by Rita Mae Brown in her book Sudden Death (Bantam Books, New York, 1983), p. 68.
George Santayana did, however, say, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

If a series of similar events does infact repeat history, identifying and interpreting modern events to correspond them to historic events is often misinterpreted. When it does happen to occur then "hindsight is 20/20". It's much easier to connect the similarities after the fact. Like similarities in Lincoln's and Kennedy's Assassinations. When similar events don't create the same outcome, does anyone ever say... See, such and such didn't happen?
